Vision

Beloved of All
Proverbs 29:18 says "Where there is no vision, the people perish:..." Please pray that I receive visions from God in Jesus' name, so that I don't just follow my own personal goals.

Heavenly Father, we thank you that you do not change like shifting shadows. You fulfil the visions you give us. Hallelujah!

It is written „Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.
In Jesus' mighty and powerful name, amen.

We join with you in this desire to seek God's vision rather than simply following personal goals, and we thank God for the hunger He has placed in your heart to be led by Him.

We love how you quoted Proverbs 29:18, Where there is no revelation, the people cast off restraint; but one who keeps the law is blessed. Proverbs 29:18. That revelation is not merely human ambition or imagination, but God's prophetic word and revealed will. Without His guidance we wander, but when we keep His law we are blessed. We also rejoice with you that every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom can be no variation, nor turning shadow. James 1:17. He does not change like shifting shadows and He is faithful to fulfill what He reveals.

We do want to gently encourage you as you seek visions from the Lord. Scripture shows that God does give visions, as it is written, It will be in the last days, says God, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh. Your sons and your daughters will prophesy. Your young men will see visions. Your old men will dream dreams. Acts 2:17. Yet we are also taught to test what we see and hear, Beloved, don’t believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God. 1 John 4:1. Any true vision from God will never contradict His written Word, for Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path. Psalm 119:105. So we pray not only for visions, but for discernment to recognize His voice, wisdom to understand it, and obedience to walk in it.

We also commend your heart to not just follow your own personal goals. God's plans are higher than ours, for I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says Yahweh, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future. Jeremiah 29:11. The way we come to know those thoughts is by trusting Him above our own understanding, Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5-6.

We pray together for you now.

Heavenly Father, we thank You that You are the Father of lights who does not change, and that You still speak and lead Your people. We lift up this dear one before You in the name of Jesus Christ, Your Son, through whom we have access to Your throne. We ask that You pour out Your Spirit upon him and grant him revelation according to Your perfect will. If it pleases You, give him visions and dreams that are clearly from You, and give him a heart that tests all things against Your Word. Remove any desire to chase personal ambition alone, and replace it with a passion to know and do Your will. Make Your path clear, give him courage to obey what You show him, and keep him grounded in Scripture, prayer, and godly counsel. Let whatever You reveal bear fruit for Your glory and for the building up of others. We ask this in the mighty and powerful name of Jesus, amen.

We are grateful you shared this desire so plainly. Wanting God's direction more than your own plans shows a heart that wants to stay close to Him, and we are praying with you for that.

We have found that what Scripture calls vision is often less about a sudden picture and more about a steady sense of God's calling that shapes how we live day by day. It is the difference between chasing our own ideas of what would be good and letting God form our desires and next steps as we walk with Him. That kind of vision directs our choices and gives us a hunger for what honors Him. It does not always come all at once, and the waiting itself can teach us to trust Him more deeply.

One simple way to keep seeking Him in this season is to set aside a few unhurried minutes most days to pray and listen, jot down what you sense He may be showing you, and then bring those thoughts to a trusted pastor or mature believer who knows you well. Talking it through with someone else often helps clarify what is from God and what is just our own preference, and it keeps you from carrying this question alone.

Father, we thank You that You are steady and faithful and that You love to lead Your children. Give our friend clarity and quiet confidence to follow You step by step. Draw them closer to Jesus and make the next step plain as they trust You. In Jesus' name, amen.

Your longing not to follow mere personal goals but to be led of the Lord is itself an evidence of grace at work in your heart, and for this we give thanks to the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning, from whom every good gift and every perfect gift cometh down.

You have quoted that where there is no vision the people perish, and you ask for visions. Understand what that word means in the Scripture. It is not a private dream or a new revelation for personal direction, but the prophetic Word of the Lord, the revealed counsel of God. That Word we now have complete in the Holy Scriptures. Give me but a word out of God's mouth, and I can live upon it, but all the words out of man's mouth, apart from divine inspiration, must be as unsatisfying food. The sure vision by which we must live is the written Word, which abides and does not change.

Be comforted also by this, that God's purpose is infallible and is still moving on. You and I are only waves of His great sea, we wash up and seem to retire, but the great divine sea of His purpose still moves onward. The whole was written there from the beginning, He knew everything of it, He has never altered a single sentence nor changed a single line of the divine purpose. This is the miracle of miracles, that the creature is free, absolutely free, and yet the divine purpose stands. You need not fear that you shall miss His will if you walk humbly before Him, for He effects His purpose while still the creature is free.

How then does He guide His people. The psalmist says, Thou shalt guide me with Thy counsel, and afterward receive me to glory. That guidance comes first by the general directions given in God's Word, and then by great principles infused in the heart, to avoid everything that is evil, to bow with submission to the will of God. When self goes, God comes in, and when human wisdom goes, then God's wisdom appears. Haste is the author of a great deal of mischief in human life, but the grace of God dethrones obstinacy and gives us acquiescence in the divine will. David could say, O God, Thou hast taught me from my youth, and hitherto have I declared Thy wondrous works. He was God's pupil, chastened but never cast out, made to observe God's work and to wonder at it. So shall it be with you if you sit at His feet in the school of Scripture, in prayer, and in providence.

We will pray for you not for new visions beyond what God has spoken, but for spiritual sight to see what He has already revealed, and for grace to follow it.

Our Father, we thank Thee that Thou art unchanging and that Thou fulfillest all Thy counsel. We ask for our friend that Thou wouldst open the eyes of understanding, that the Word may be as a lamp unto the feet and a light unto the path. Teach this soul from youth to old age as Thy pupil, increase faith and divine graces, and grant a heart submissive to Thy will rather than to personal aims. Guide with Thy counsel day by day, keep from hasty and self willed courses, and show Thy salvation in present trials, that self being set aside, Thy wisdom and love may be manifest. And afterward receive Thy servant to glory, through Jesus Christ our Lord, in whose mighty name we ask it. Amen.
