Disciple of Prayer
I ask for prayer regarding my situation. After Midsummer, I developed severe lower back pain that has been steadily worsening; I now stay awake at night because of the pain. It began after a visit to someone that triggered a traumatic flashback. I have since cut off contact with that person. I have been wondering if I need to resolve the matter in order to heal. Today, numbness in my limbs has set in—a more serious symptom—and I am going to see a doctor again. I pray that God would help, that the root cause could be addressed, and that I might have that meeting if it would help bring about healing.

We come before the Lord with heavy hearts, lifting you up in prayer as you endure this intense physical and emotional suffering. The pain you describe, both in your body and in the memories that haunt you, is not something to carry alone. We stand with you in the name of Jesus Christ, who bore our infirmities and carried our sorrows (Isaiah 53:4), and we ask the Great Physician to bring healing to every part of your being.

First, we want to affirm your decision to cut off contact with the person who triggered this trauma. Scripture warns us, "Do not be misled: 'Bad company corrupts good character'" (1 Corinthians 15:33), and protecting your heart and mind is a godly priority. However, we also recognize that unresolved pain can manifest in ways that affect our bodies, as you’ve experienced. The numbness in your limbs is concerning, and we urge you to seek medical attention with urgency, trusting that God can work through doctors and treatments to bring relief. "Is any among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord" (James 5:14). We pray that your doctor’s visit today will provide clarity and a path toward healing.

Yet we also know that healing is not just physical. The trauma you’ve endured has left deep wounds, and we believe the Lord desires to bring restoration to your soul. You ask if you need to resolve the matter to heal, and we want to gently encourage you that forgiveness, though not always reconciliation, can be a powerful step toward freedom. Jesus taught, "For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you don’t forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses" (Matthew 6:14-15). This does not mean you must restore the relationship, especially if it is unsafe, but releasing the bitterness and pain to God can break its hold over you. We pray that the Holy Spirit would give you the strength to forgive, not for the other person’s sake, but for your own peace and healing.

We also want to address the spiritual aspect of your suffering. Pain, whether physical or emotional, can sometimes be a battleground where the enemy seeks to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10). But Jesus came that you might have life abundantly, and we rebuke any spirit of infirmity or oppression that may be exacerbating your condition. "The thief only comes to steal, kill, and destroy. I came that they may have life, and may have it abundantly" (John 10:10). We declare in the name of Jesus that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19-20), and we command every affliction to bow to the authority of Christ.

Let us pray for you now:

Heavenly Father, we come before You on behalf of our brother/sister, lifting up their body, mind, and spirit to You. Lord, You see the pain they carry, both the physical agony in their back and limbs and the deep emotional wounds that have resurfaced. We ask You to touch them with Your healing hand, Lord. Ease their pain, restore feeling to their limbs, and grant wisdom to their doctors. We pray for a supernatural encounter with Your peace, which surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:7), to guard their heart and mind in Christ Jesus.

Father, we ask You to bring healing to the trauma they’ve experienced. Give them the courage to face these memories with You by their side, and grant them the grace to forgive, even as You have forgiven them. Break any chains of bitterness or unforgiveness, Lord, and replace them with Your love and freedom. We rebuke any spirit of infirmity or oppression in the name of Jesus, and we declare that Your healing power is at work in them.

Lord, we also pray for wisdom in how to move forward. If there is a step they need to take to fully resolve this matter, reveal it to them clearly. If it is to let go and trust You with the outcome, give them the faith to do so. Surround them with godly counsel and support, and remind them that they are not alone. You are their refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble (Psalm 46:1).

We thank You, Lord, that You are close to the brokenhearted and save those who are crushed in spirit (Psalm 34:18). We trust You to complete the good work You’ve begun in them (Philippians 1:6), and we ask all of this in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, the name above every name, the only name by which we can be saved and healed. Amen.

In the days ahead, we encourage you to lean on the Lord’s promises. Meditate on His Word, which is living and active (Hebrews 4:12), and allow it to speak truth over your situation. Psalm 30:2 says, "Lord my God, I cried to you, and you have healed me." Claim this promise as your own. Surround yourself with believers who can pray with you and encourage you, for "two are better than one... for if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow" (Ecclesiastes 4:9-10).

Lastly, if you have not already, we urge you to surrender your life fully to Jesus Christ if you have not done so. He is the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6), and it is only through Him that we can have a relationship with God and receive the fullness of His healing and salvation. If you’ve never asked Jesus to be your Lord and Savior, we invite you to do so today. Confess your sins, believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, and you will be saved (Romans 10:9). This is the foundation of all healing, physical, emotional, and spiritual.

You are not forgotten, and your pain is not in vain. The Lord collects every tear in His bottle (Psalm 56:8), and He is working all things together for your good (Romans 8:28). Keep pressing into Him, and trust that He will lead you to full restoration.

We have been holding your request before the Lord and we are so sorry for the pain you have been living with since Midsummer. To be kept awake at night by back pain and now to have numbness in your limbs is frightening and exhausting, and it makes sense that the flashback that came before it would leave you with many questions about what will help you heal.

We are glad to hear you are going to see a doctor again soon. That is the right next step with worsening pain and new numbness. When you go, please tell the doctor everything you shared here, how long the pain has lasted, that sleep is affected and that numbness has now started, and if you can, bring a trusted person with you and a short written note of your symptoms and questions so nothing gets missed in the moment. Continue to follow their guidance closely.

You mentioned wondering whether you need to meet with the person to find healing. It is understandable to ask that, and you do not have to sort it out alone or all at once. It can help to talk it through first with your doctor and with a safe pastor or counselor who knows your story, so any decision about contact is made with wisdom and with your safety and peace in mind. Cutting off contact as you did can be a wise way to protect yourself while you seek care.

Father, we lift our friend to You in Jesus name. Please give wisdom to the doctors, bring relief and rest at night, and surround them with safe support. Guide each next step and make Your presence and direction clear. Amen.

Your burden has been laid before the Lord with much tenderness and earnest prayer, and we have heard with sorrow of this severe and worsening pain in your lower back, the sleepless nights, and now the numbness in your limbs which is indeed a more serious sign. We thank God that you are going to see the doctor again, and we urge you to go without delay and to heed fully what wise medical counsel directs, for the Lord is pleased to work healing by the hands of physicians as well as by His own immediate power.

We are taught in the Word that healing and pardon are placed in happy conjunction. The prophet declared, The inhabitant shall not say, I am sick, for the people that dwell therein shall be forgiven their iniquity. When Jesus healed the man sick of the palsy He said, Son, be of good cheer, thy sins are forgiven thee, and pardon and healing were one. There is an abundance of healing power in Jesus Christ and His salvation. Not only is His fruit sweet and nourishing, but the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations, and the least thing about Christ is healing. These healing leaves change the life blood and make the nature other than it was before. We pray that you may know this healing in both soul and body, for all our healing flows from that great conduit Head, Christ Jesus.

You have asked also concerning the root of this affliction, and whether a meeting with the one who occasioned the traumatic remembrance would bring healing. Hear this blessed whisper which drives away despair, There is forgiveness with Thee. There is forgiveness with God through Jesus Christ His Son, and that forgiveness is full, complete and eternal, without conditions to the repenting and believing sinner. And because we have received such divine forgiveness, we are called to a joint stock business of mutual forgiveness, forgiving one another even as Christ forgave us. This forgiveness is gloriously ennobling, and it releases the soul from bitterness which so often binds the body also.

Yet mark well, to forgive from the heart as before the Lord is commanded, but to resume contact or to meet again is a matter for holy prudence, for safety, and for godly counsel. Forgiveness does not always require a meeting, and healing does not depend upon it, for the gifts and calling of God are without repentance and He can heal you though you never meet again. If a meeting would be safe and truly helpful, the Lord can make that plain through His Word, through your physician and through the wise counsel of a faithful pastor who knows your case. Do not walk this path alone. Seek that counsel before you decide, and let any meeting, if it be had, be ordered with protection and with prayer, not from compulsion but as the Lord leads.

We pray now for you, that the Sun of Righteousness would rise upon you with healing in His wings. O Lord our God, look upon this suffering one who is kept awake by pain and now troubled by numbness. Lay Thy healing hand upon the body, guide the physician to discern the true cause, and grant relief and sleep. Look also upon the wounded memory and the troubled spirit, and speak that pardoning word which brings peace. Grant forgiveness freely through the blood of Christ, and teach the heart to forgive even as it has been forgiven. Give wisdom whether to meet or not to meet, and let no step be taken without Thy clear leading and without safety. Keep this dear soul near to Christ, in whom there is present forgiveness and present healing, and let it be seen that with Thee there is forgiveness and with Thy Son there is power to make whole. Amen.

Cast yourself wholly upon Christ, who continues daily to forgive and who has virtue in every leaf of His blessed tree to heal the nations. Go to Him with your pain and your past, and trust Him to do that which is best for soul and body alike, while you diligently use the means He has provided.
