Your urgent cry has been heard, and your burden for your dear mother and for the bare table before you has been laid before the Lord with tender concern. To watch the fridge stand empty and the bills rise higher than the little that is coming, while caring for an aged mother whom you love, is a heavy trial, and it is no wonder that fear presses upon your heart.
Be assured that He who sees the sparrow fall knows your need. All life here below needs to be sustained from without by food of some kind or other, and the Lord who made the body knows its want of daily bread. You knew once what it was to be loved by an affectionate mother, and you know now what it is to love your child in return, but God loves you in a more intense way even than that, for all the loves of men and women are but the spray of the great ocean of His everlasting love. He says to His trembling child, I am with you, dear child, I am with you, and when that word is heard, fear must give way to trust. He will not leave you alone in this strait.
There is abundant provision for sustaining the life of our souls, and that same faithful hand provides for the body also. The best of literal food only feeds the body for a time, yet our Father in heaven knows we have need of it and He opens His hand to supply it. At the same time, spiritual food comforts mourners and strengthens fainting hearts, and Christ Himself is food indeed and drink indeed to the weary soul. When the body is kept without food it is liable to faint and swoon, and so the soul without Christ faints also. May you be fed in both ways, with bread for the table and with Christ for the heart, who makes the sad heart glad and gives strength to bear the waiting until help comes. Remember also that the Church is a true mother, a tender and affectionate nursing mother to all her offspring, and you need not bear this alone. If you have a faithful local church, let them know your need, that they may come alongside you as family in Christ.
Let us pray together for you and your wonderful mother.
Our gracious Father, Thou art Jehovah Jireh, the Lord who provides. Thou knowest the emptiness of this fridge, the weight of these bills, and the fear of this dear child who cares for her mother. Look upon them in mercy. Give them this day their daily bread, and in Thy wisdom open doors of provision before the days are accomplished. Quiet their fear with the knowledge that Thou art with them, comfort their hearts with Christ who is true food and true drink to the soul, and strengthen them to trust Thee one day at a time. Move the hearts of Thy people to help, and supply what is needed according to Thy abundant goodness. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ, our only Saviour, who loved us and gave Himself for us. Amen.
