The Rosary

Thank you for asking about the rosary and about prayer. In our fellowship we do not pray the rosary, and I want to explain why with care and with hope for you.

The Bible teaches that God loves you and longs to have direct fellowship with you. That fellowship is made possible only through Jesus Christ. He alone is the mediator between God and people, and He ever lives to intercede for us. Because of Him, you can come directly to the Father. You do not need to come through anyone else, and there is no need for prayers directed to Mary or to others. If you have not yet come into that relationship with God through Christ, the one prayer He is waiting to hear is the honest cry, God be merciful to me, a sinner. That prayer opens the relationship that makes all other prayer meaningful.

Jesus also taught us how to pray, and He warned against thinking that prayer is heard because of many words or vain repetition. He gave what we often call the Lord's Prayer not as words to be memorized and recited over and over, but as a model or pattern for prayer. In that pattern we see what real prayer is.

Real prayer is first worship, a heart aware of the greatness and glory of God, then it is petition, bringing your own needs to the Father, and then intercession, bringing the needs of others and of a lost world to Him. It is not long length that makes prayer effective. The prayers recorded in Scripture are often very short. What matters is that prayer comes from the heart. Scripture says the effectual fervent prayer of a righteous person avails much. That is prayer that rises from sincere faith and deep need, not from reciting a set form.

The purpose of prayer is not to get God to do our will, but to bring our hearts into harmony with His will so that His will may be done on earth as it is in heaven. Prayer begins with God and His purposes, He makes those purposes known to our hearts, we express them back to Him, and He then accomplishes His work. In that sense prayer opens the door for God to do what He already desires to do, without violating the free will He has given us.

God uses people who pray, and prayer is not limited by place or circumstance. Whether alone or agreeing together with one or two others, God hears. For that reason we are urged to continue in prayer, to watch with thanksgiving, and to keep laboring fervently. When we come into harmony with His purpose, we see His answers.

If you have been drawn to the rosary because you long to pray and to feel close to God, that longing is good, and God wants to meet it in a personal way. You can pray simply and directly to the Father in the name of Jesus. Praise Him for who He is, ask Him for your daily needs, bring others before Him, and trust Him to do His will. End that prayer with praise, confident that He has heard.

I would be glad to pray for you in this biblical way and to help you learn to walk in that daily fellowship with the Father through His Son.
