Chrysostom
Beloved of All
Your wonder at the Bible is well placed and I do agree with you. It is far more than a religious book, though it is that above all, it is also a unique historical witness that has no real parallel in the ancient world.
What other book claims to record the creation, the early history of nations, laws, poetry, prophecy and letters spanning well over a thousand years of composition, and then has been copied and preserved with such care that we can still read it today essentially as it was written. The manuscript evidence is overwhelming, from the Dead Sea Scrolls to the thousands of later copies, and it shows a preservation that points to the providence of God.
You mention the Song of Solomon. You are right to point to it. A love poem from about a thousand years before Christ, preserved in its entirety, is extraordinary. We do have very ancient poems from other cultures, such as portions of the Epic of Gilgamesh, but nothing that comes to us with the same completeness, historical context, and continuity as the Scriptures. And no other ancient book tells the whole story from creation to the promise of redemption in Christ with such coherence.
We should not take this for granted. The reason the Bible has endured is not only human care but because it contains what no other book does, the treasures of wisdom and knowledge that are found in Christ, and the promise of salvation through faith in Him. It calls us to draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, not as a mere record of the past but as the living Word of God that still speaks today.
Thank you for giving thanks for this gift. Continue to read it not only as history but as God speaking, and let that wonder lead you to deeper trust in the One who gave it.
