To give thanks for daily mercies is the mark of a soul instructed by grace, for the faithful know that every good thing comes from above. Your prayer for the salvation of former relationships reveals a heart that has understood how precious even one soul is, since Christ died for all. Yet you are right to ask for grace to shift your main focus to the new things God is now doing. The Cross has not only put away sin but has created us anew, setting us on a heavenly course far above the old ways.

Why then should the runner look backward? The race is before you, the upward call beckons. The evil one would keep you so burdened with anxiety for things past that you neglect the present duties of teaching, caring for the flock, and spreading the gospel. But behold, these are the new things God sets before you.

Attend to them with your whole strength. Yet you need not cease praying for that one; lift them up in faith, knowing that the grace which called you, unworthy as you were, is sufficient to call them also. Only do not let past sorrows weigh down your running. The grace of God is enough.

Press on, then, giving thanks in everything, and trust that He who opens doors will accomplish His work through you.

There is a holy tension you are describing, one that so many who have been redeemed deeply feel. You are holding on with one hand to a deep, God-given burden for souls who are far off, even from a former season of life, and yet with the other hand you are reaching out for what God is bringing into being right now. That is not a contradiction to be solved by your own strength; it is a posture that requires the very grace you are asking for.

The cry you have lifted, asking God to do both, reminds me how easy it is to try to help God out. We know what He wants, salvation, reconciliation, regeneration, and so we are tempted to strive in our own wisdom to bring it to pass. But the works He has prepared are not advanced by anxiety. For the very ones you are interceding for, their full, authentic repentance and the early salvation of that prodigy are works only the Spirit can accomplish. Your role is the persistent prayer, but your peace cannot be anchored to a visible outcome you cannot control. The past, with all its complexity, has been sealed in a sense. God does not bring up the old evidence as a prosecutor to condemn His children, and neither should you live as if you are still in that courtroom. The Former Things demand our intercession, but they must not hold our hearts hostage to guilt, for God’s mercy toward you is fresh again this morning.

Your focus on the New is exactly right and deeply scriptural. God is not merely patching up the old creation; He declares, “Behold, I am doing a new thing.” Your primary energy now belongs to the flock among you, to your own teaching, and to keeping a close watch on yourself. Do not despise the quiet, mundane duties of setting things in order and meeting pressing needs. Running this race to win means learning the discipline of forgetting what lies behind so that you can stretch forward with full strength. The enemy of that forward press is often a misplaced sense of noble devotion that keeps looking backward. Be gentle with yourself in this. You were once deceived too, serving various passions, but that is no longer your life. You have been crucified with Christ. The life you now live is hidden in Him, and that reality must be translated into your present, daily walk.

Continue to intercede with a heart that loves, but dare to trust that God is as passionate about those souls as you are. Leave room for Him to work while you keep still in your spirit. Let His quiet, sovereign love cover the past while you obey the Master’s voice right now. He is opening doors for the gospel, for study, and for fellowship that are set directly before your feet today. Do not neglect those doors by staring back at roads that are closed off to you. May you know the depth of His grace to do both: to carry them always in your heart for prayer, yet to run the race set before you with a liberated, forward-leaning stride.

We are deeply grateful for the privilege of standing with you in prayer, lifting up your heartfelt requests before our Heavenly Father. Your trust in sharing such personal and sacred burdens is a humbling reminder of the fellowship we share in Christ.

As we have prayed for your continued reliance on God’s daily mercies and faithfulness—echoing Lamentations 3:23—we have also interceded for grace to balance the care of former responsibilities with the calling to embrace new things, just as Isaiah 42:9 declares. It is our prayer that the Lord has strengthened you to walk in both faithfulness to what He has already entrusted to you and openness to the fresh works He is preparing.

We have asked the Lord to open doors for the Gospel, as in Revelation 3:7-8, and to grant you wisdom in stewarding the relationships in your care—whether family, flock, or those yet to come to faith. May He continue to provide grace to intercede for your distant loved ones, that they would experience true repentance and regeneration, while also empowering you to press forward into the new things He is doing, without losing sight of His eternal promises.
