I recently auditioned for a play and am really hoping to get a part, even a small part. I haven't done theatre in years but I loved it all throughout high-school and am trying to get back into it. I need help accepting God's will either way. Thank you

We hear your heart, dear brother or sister in Christ, and we stand with you in prayer as you seek God’s will in this new endeavor. It’s beautiful to see your passion reignited for something that once brought you joy, and we rejoice that you’re stepping out in faith to pursue it. The Lord delights in our willingness to use the gifts He’s given us, and theater can be a powerful way to reflect His creativity and truth, whether through storytelling, music, or performance.

Yet we also recognize the struggle in surrendering the outcome to Him. It’s human to desire affirmation, to hope for success, and to feel the weight of anticipation. But Scripture reminds us in Proverbs 16:3, "Commit your deeds to Yahweh, and your plans shall succeed." This doesn’t guarantee the role you want, but it assures you that God’s purpose will prevail. Whether you’re cast in a leading part, a small role, or not at all, His plan for you is good, "for I know the thoughts that I think toward you," says Yahweh, "thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future" (Jeremiah 29:11).

We must also gently address the temptation to place our worth or identity in the outcome of this audition. If we’re not careful, the desire for a part can become an idol, subtly shifting our focus from God’s sufficiency to our own performance. Jesus warns us in Matthew 6:33, "But seek first God’s Kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well." Are you seeking His Kingdom first in this pursuit, or is there a part of you clinging to the need for validation through this role? Let us repent of any misplaced priorities and realign our hearts with His.

If you don’t receive the part, will you trust that God may be protecting you from pride, distraction, or even a path that isn’t meant for you right now? And if you do receive it, will you use it as an opportunity to glorify Him, remembering that "whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men" (Colossians 3:23)? Either way, your identity is secure in Christ, not in the applause of others or the size of your role.

Let us pray for you now:

Heavenly Father, we come before You on behalf of our brother/sister, lifting up their heart and this audition to You. Lord, You know the desires of their heart, and You see the passion You’ve placed within them. We ask that You would grant them peace as they wait, trusting in Your perfect timing and plan. If it is Your will for them to receive this part, we pray You would open the door wide and equip them with the confidence, skill, and humility to steward it well for Your glory. If it is not Your will, we ask that You would soften their heart to accept Your "no" as a loving redirection, knowing that You work all things together for their good.

Father, guard their heart from idolatry, whether of success, approval, or the pursuit itself. Remind them that their worth is found in You alone, not in the outcome of this audition. Fill them with Your Holy Spirit, that they may walk in contentment and joy, regardless of the result. And if this path is indeed part of Your plan for them, we pray You would use it to draw others to Yourself through their witness. May they shine brightly for You, whether on stage or in the audience.

We ask all of this in the mighty name of Jesus, the Author and Perfecter of our faith, who reminds us that "apart from Me, you can do nothing" (John 15:5). Strengthen our brother/sister to abide in You, and may Your will be done in their life. Amen.

In the meantime, we encourage you to immerse yourself in God’s Word, particularly in passages about surrender and trust. Psalm 37:4-5 is a beautiful reminder: "Also delight yourself in Yahweh, and he will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to Yahweh. Trust also in him, and he will do this." Notice that the promise follows delighting in the Lord first, when our hearts are aligned with His, our desires begin to reflect His will.

Consider also the story of David, who was anointed as king but spent years waiting and even fleeing for his life before stepping into the role God had for him. His psalms are filled with raw honesty about his struggles, yet they always circle back to trust in God’s faithfulness. You may find comfort in Psalm 27:13-14: "I am still confident of this: I will see the goodness of Yahweh in the land of the living. Wait for Yahweh. Be strong, and let your heart take courage. Yes, wait for Yahweh."

Lastly, we urge you to seek godly community during this time. Share your hopes and fears with fellow believers who can pray with you, hold you accountable, and remind you of God’s promises when discouragement creeps in. Proverbs 27:17 tells us, "Iron sharpens iron; so a man sharpens his friend’s countenance." You don’t have to walk this path alone.

No matter what happens, remember that God is not done with you. Whether this audition leads to a role or a closed door, He is shaping you for His purposes. Trust Him, and keep your eyes fixed on Jesus, the ultimate example of surrender to the Father’s will.

We remember how it feels to walk out of an audition with your heart full of hope. It takes real courage to put yourself out there again after years away, and we’re genuinely glad you did.

It’s easy to see God’s will only in the outcome we want, but often his direction shows up just as clearly in the waiting, or even in a closed door that gently redirects us. For now, the fact that you’ve returned to something you loved is already a quiet step of faith. Your love for theater isn’t thrown away no matter what the director decides.

If the anxious “what ifs” start circling, try turning that energy into a short, honest conversation with God. Tell him what you’re hoping for, and then practice deliberately leaving it in his hands. It’s not a one-and-done act of surrender but a steady rhythm of trust. And if you don’t get the part, consider whether there’s another way to stay connected to theater right now, volunteering, reading scripts, or simply letting that spark guide you toward a different creative outlet.

Father, thank you for the joy this person finds in storytelling and the stage. Quiet their heart as they wait. Help them rest in you, not in a casting decision, and give them peace in whatever comes. Open the right doors and close the ones that aren’t for them. In Jesus’ name, amen.

God, bless me to have an ever growing closer stronger, more intimate relationship with You. Bless me with the love, desire, strength, and the spirit of obedience to always delight myself in You, seek first Your kingdom, Your righteousness, and to always respect and obey You. Bless me to know You, so that I can trust You with all my heart, acknowledge You in all my ways, and lean not to my own understanding. Bless me with knowledge, wisdom, and understanding in all You have called me to do.

God heal me in every area of my life. Deliver and cleanse me of everything in my life that doesn't honor You. Transform and renew my mind. Bless me with love, power, and a sound mind. Let the mind that is in Christ Jesus be in me. Bless me to have and operate with a God-conscious-solution-focused-heart-mind-spirit-and-attitude. Bless me to have a God Kingdom Culture Mentality. God be with me as a mighty warrior. Let no weapon formed against me prosper. Protect me from all the plans of my enemies and the plans of the enemy of my soul. You have a desire for this part, and that is not sinful; it is the joy of a creature to pour out his heart before his Maker. Yet learn that the surest way to have your desire granted is to make it one with God’s will. When your will becomes a ray of His own eternal purpose, you may ask what you will. But if the Lord withholds the role, count it no denial but a loving redirection.

The axle of the universe is His will, and even the smallest events spin upon it. Nothing happens but what He permits or ordains. Therefore, in your going to and fro, feel always the quiet truth, “If the Lord wills.” You wish to act again: ask Him freely, yet brace yourself to say, “Nevertheless, not as I will, but as Thou wilt.” This is the holy boldness of a child, and the deeper surrender of a saint. To win such a frame, look to the cross where Christ prayed the same.

If you get the part, give thanks and use it for His glory; if not, believe that He has kept it from you for a better reason than you can see. Are you not His jewel, and will He not polish you with that which is best? Trust Jesus, and let His Spirit change your will until you find your happiness in His. This is the pathway of peace: “I will,” yet “Not as I will.” That is true liberty, to want only what God wants.

Let this trial teach you to submit yourself to God’s way, for He always wills what is for your good and His praise.

The love you hold for the theatre, for the stage, for the craft you practiced in your youth, this is a love that seeks a kind of glory. But examine it closely, for the heart is a cunning negotiator. God often allures us by those very things we most desire, but not for the end we imagine. If He withholds this part, it is not cruelty. Is it not said that His judgments are more to be desired than gold, yea, than much fine gold? The applause of men is a river that flows past and is gone. Why do you admire what is merely fair to look at, yet has no true substance? Let us give up such notions and lay hold of the things that are truly real. The grace of this moment, the chance to place your will entirely into His hands, is of far more use. For if you gain the part, will you not be tempted to love the glory that comes from men? But if you can say, “Not my will, but Thine be done,” you have performed a far greater drama before the audience of Heaven. This is where your power and diligence lie, not in landing a role, but in preserving the brightness of a soul content with the Creator’s fashioning for your life. Clothe yourself in this humbleness, which makes even the ill-formed well-formed in the eyes of God. This is to take your stand upon the rock, where you cannot be easily turned about by either elation or despair.

Understand that the very outcome, whatever it may be, is a dispensation according to God’s purpose. This is not to say that His election is a sign of your lack of virtue if you are not chosen, but rather that He is selecting souls fit for a particular race at this very hour. Who can lay a charge against God’s elect? If He has not elected you for this troupe, it is not a rejection of you, but a course correction towards something better. The thing itself, the play, the role, is shown to have no ultimate strength nor suitableness for your present times if He bars the way. He does not desire a sacrifice of praise from you that is mingled with vainglory. What then? He desires the abolition of your own clinging to it. He wants you to be truly hospitable to His will, not with pride, giving orders to Providence, but as one who receives a kindness. You are not conferring a favor on God by gracefully accepting disappointment; you are the one receiving the greater wealth. When you give up your money, your wealth is increased; when you give up your will, your soul gains liberty. This is the mystical birth of a deeper faith. To have been cleansed of your former grasping is God’s part; to remain for the future pure, never again to admit the stain of rebellion against His ordering, that belongs to your own earnestness. Do not ask for the role only, but for the grace to stand fast, that whether you are cast or not, you may be found clinging to the one thing needful, so that you may behold the glory which He wishes to share with you for ever.
