Your petition is most timely and scriptural, for the Lord has taught us that the Captain of our salvation was made perfect through sufferings, not that He was ever imperfect in character, for He was ever perfect God and perfect man, but that He was made officially perfect as a Saviour through His sorrows. And so it shall ennoble the whole work of grace in His people. When new believers and those less grounded in the whole counsel of God are tried by birth pangs, by earthquake and war and perplexity, let them remember that it became Him for whom are all things and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to perfect His Son through suffering, and He will in like manner bring His sons unto glory through the same path. Suffering does not mar the Church, it prepares her.

We take comfort with you that our Lord Jesus ever liveth to make intercession for us. He is both the Author and the Sustainer of faith, and faith never lives independent of Him upon whom it relies. Your prayer for Nepal and for the church in every approaching trial has been heard and we join our prayers with yours before the Lord.

We ask with you that God would strengthen the believers there, especially the new believers and those not yet grounded in the whole counsel of God. Suffering and perplexity and what Scripture calls birth pangs are not strange to the people of God, but have their necessity and purpose. As it is written, it became Him in bringing many sons to glory to make the Captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings, and so the work of salvation comes not only through believing but also through suffering and enduring the same things with patience. We pray that their faith would not fail, and that being turned back and established, they may strengthen their brothers and sisters.

We remember that when Jesus saw the multitudes He was moved with compassion because they were troubled and scattered as sheep having no shepherd, and He said the harvest truly is plenteous but the laborers are few, pray therefore the Lord of the harvest that He will send forth laborers into His harvest. The harvest is His own, sown by the prophets and reaped by those He sends. So we pray as you have prayed from Matthew 9, that the Lord of the harvest would release workers, and grant love and unity to His church, that the gospel of the Kingdom may be preached as a testimony to all nations.

We pray also for rescue teams and for all who show mercy in calamity, that God would give endurance. There is nothing so impenetrable as long suffering. As a spark falling into the deep does it no injury but is itself quenched, so upon a long suffering soul whatever unexpected thing falls quickly vanishes and does not disturb the soul. We ask God to form such long suffering in His people, so that they are not easily shaken but prove by perseverance that the preaching is divine.

We give thanks that Christ Himself intercedes for us, as Romans 8 and Hebrews 7 teach, and that our intercession is joined to His. In that confidence we ask that the church not be anxious but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving make its requests known to God, and that the peace of God which passes understanding would guard hearts and minds.

Your burden for believers facing earthquakes, storms, wars and shaking reflects the heart of Jesus when He looked on harassed and helpless crowds and said the harvest is great but the workers are few. It is right to pray that the Lord of the harvest would send out workers, and to keep praying for that harvest with the peace that comes from making requests known to God, as Philippians 4 teaches, without anxiety but with trust.

Scripture gives a full counsel about suffering that new believers especially need. Jesus taught that some hear the word with joy but have no root, so when tribulation or persecution arises because of the word they fall away. Others are choked by the cares of this world. Only those rooted deeply become fruitful. That is why teaching the whole counsel of God matters so much, so that believers understand that perplexity, suffering and what Jesus called birth pangs in Matthew 24 are not a surprise or a sign that God has failed, but part of what He said would come before the end. When that foundation is laid, faith can stand.

History shows that hardship has never destroyed the true church. When pressure comes it separates what is real from what is not, it binds believers together in love, and their faith grows and abounds even when they are young in the Lord. The early church grew exceedingly under heavy persecution, and in more recent generations where believers have had very little access to the Scriptures and have faced severe opposition, the church has still multiplied greatly. When persecution scattered believers from Jerusalem throughout Judea and Samaria, God used that scattering to spread the gospel to new places. Philip went to Samaria and preached Christ there, and what was meant for harm became the means for the word to go further. In the same way God can use present distress to open doors for the gospel and to display generous love between believers.

That is why your prayers for strengthening are so needed. Jesus Himself lives to intercede for His people, as Romans 8 and Hebrews 7 teach, and He prayed for Peter that his faith would not fail and that when he turned back he would strengthen his brothers, as in Luke 22. Our intercession joins His. We can ask that those who are shaken and who may misunderstand suffering would be restored, rooted more deeply in the word, and then made able to strengthen others. We can pray that rescue efforts would be effective, that love and unity would abound among believers under pressure, and that many more laborers would be raised up and sent, because the fields are already white for harvest.

We also often forget to pray for brothers and sisters in other lands who are suffering persecution daily for the name of Christ, in places where they are beaten, imprisoned or killed for sharing their faith. Remembering them enlarges our own hearts and joins us together as one body. May the Lord keep you watchful and not anxious, alert to the signs of the times as Jesus taught, faithful to preach the gospel and to teach all that He commanded, so that this gospel of the kingdom may be proclaimed as a testimony to all peoples until He brings to completion all for which creation groans.
