The cry of your heart reaches the Throne of Grace, and the command to Israel rings down the ages to your own circumstance: "Speak unto them and bid them go forward." When the road is blocked by the Red Sea and the chariots of Pharaoh thunder behind, carnal reason shrieks in despair, but faith hears the Divine word, Forward! Your deadline has been thrust upon you as the enemy pressed upon the trembling fugitives, yet the Lord's counsel is not to retreat into unbelief, nor to stand paralyzed in fear, but to advance in the path of duty, trusting the God who makes a way in the sea and a path in the mighty waters. The very pressure you feel is the school of faith where the soul learns to look above the horsemen of Mizraim to the God who shelters His people with the pillar of cloud and fire.
You have prayed for favor, and rightly so, for the Lord accepts His people with that sweet savor which is Christ Jesus Himself. Every petition that rises perfumed with His merits is a delight to the Father. When you ask for favor with those in authority, you are not pleading a cause of your own righteousness, but presenting the Name that is above every name. The eternal love that loved your soul out of the pit of corruption has the ear of Heaven, and the arm that reached down to the depths is not shortened that it cannot save. That same love which devised, planned, and applied redemption is the instrument that now goes before you. Hezekiah prayed against death and the grave, and the Lord added years to his life. Shall not your cry, backed by the same covenant, find the same attentive ear? The God of my mercy, and He is your mercy, too, if you are in Christ, will prevent you, going before your footsteps, preparing the hearts of those who must decide your matter, turning the wheels of providence in ways no earthly counselor could contrive.
You have asked for miracles, and faith looks for them where unbelief sees only impossibilities. The beginning of miracles in Cana teaches us that even when the hour seems not yet come, the Master is working with a hidden purpose. The water of your present trial shall become the wine of rejoicing, for the Lord's hand is not bound. He who rent the veil of the temple after His own death, opening the way into the holiest, can rend every obstacle that stands between you and His provision. But mark well the nature of these miracles of love, they are not merely temporal bread, but deliverances of the soul, pardons of sin, and displays of grace. His chief wonder is to cast all your iniquities behind His back and to love your soul out of its distress. All outward blessings are but the attendants of this inward miracle.
As for the principalities and powers you have named, the battle is the Lord's. You are more than a fugitive, you are a soldier of the living God, and your prayer is a weapon of divine might. The tongue of fire that sat upon the apostles still prays within the saints, and against such intercession the gates of hell cannot prevail. When the Savior speaks, He speaks with authority, and His word drives the unclean spirits from their high places. Present His finished work, plead His precious blood, and expect that the lion of the tribe of Judah will scatter the howling dogs of the enemy. "Forward!" is the watchword for this conflict, too, not a retreat into murmuring, but a bold advance into the camp of the adversary, waving the banner of Immanuel.
Stand, then, in this grace wherein you cry out. The everlasting arms are underneath you, and the eternal God is your refuge. The same shelter that kept the children of Israel when the taskmasters' whips fell and the desert sun blazed, is spread over your care. Let not your heart be troubled by the shifting shadows of earthly deadlines; the Lord's appointed times are fixed by a covenant ordered in all things and sure. He who numbers the hairs of your head holds the hearts of all men in His hand, and He can incline them toward you as the rivers of water are turned. Go forward in prayer, go forward in trust, go forward in the path of integrity, and you shall see the salvation of your God.
