There is great cause for thanksgiving in this prayer which you have laid before the Lord for the young men, that they may grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ according to 2 Peter 3:18, and be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding as in Colossians 1:9-12.
We join our hearts with yours and entreat the Lord to pour upon them the blessing pronounced in Numbers 6:22-27, that the Lord would bless them and keep them, make His face to shine upon them and be gracious unto them. We ask that as they seek wisdom He will give liberally as He has promised in James 1:5, and that they may love the Lord their God with all their heart and soul and mind and strength, and their neighbour as themselves, according to Mark 12:30-31. May their love abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all judgment, that they may be sincere and without offence till the day of Christ, being filled with the fruits of righteousness which are by Jesus Christ, as in Philippians 1:9-11, and may the fruit of the Holy Spirit be manifest in them, love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance, as in Galatians 5:22-23, proceeding from a pure heart and a good conscience and faith unfeigned, according to 1 Timothy 1:5.
We pray also that they may hunger for the sincere milk of the Word that they may grow thereby as in 1 Peter 2:2, and grow in prayer as the disciples desired in Luke 11:1, and receive the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, the eyes of their understanding being enlightened as in Ephesians 1:17-20. May they be found worshipping the Father in spirit and in truth as in John 4:23, rejoicing evermore, praying without ceasing, in every thing giving thanks as in 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, and knowing the peace of God which passes all understanding to keep their hearts and minds through Christ Jesus as in Philippians 4:6-7. For healing and restoration we look to Him who forgives all our iniquities and heals all our diseases as in Psalm 103:2-5, and by whose stripes we are healed as declared in Isaiah 53:5 and 1 Peter 2:24. We ask that the Lord would stir them to intercession and to evangelism, that souls may be saved as in Isaiah 62:1-6 and 1 Timothy 2:1-4, and that the gifts of the Holy Spirit may be exercised in proper order for the edifying of the body as in 1 Corinthians 12:4-8, and that they may go forth to preach the gospel as in Mark 16:15-20, trusting the Lord to work with them.
The Scripture says, I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one, as in 1 John 2:14. This is our prayer for them, that they may be strong in the Lord, not in youthful pride or self confidence, but in the strength which the Holy Ghost imparts, and that the Word of God may indeed abide in them richly. The importance of a young life cannot be overstated, for by its means men have been delayed into eternity without Christ, and we would affectionately remind every young man that now is the accepted time to be at peace with his best Friend, to whom he owes everything. We commend to them character insurance in the form of believing in Jesus Christ, for salvation is through Him alone, and there is no other name under heaven given among men whereby we must be saved.
We also pray earnestly with you for their protection, as you have asked, that the Lord would not lead them into temptation and would deliver them from the evil one, according to Matthew 6:13 and Luke 11:4, and keep them from evil as our Lord prayed in John 17:15. Young men are greatly exposed, and the enemy holds forth the sparkling cup in which death is lurking, and many are too apt to mistake the great enemy for a friend. Therefore we pray, Lord, open the eyes of the young men that they may see, as Elisha prayed in 2 Kings 6:17, that they may perceive Thy divine presence observing all they do, which will be a very useful protection in the hour of temptation. Keep them from sin and from the love of sin, from the temptation to be puffed up by knowledge as in 1 Corinthians 8:1, and make them to hate the very garment spotted by the flesh, that they may be kept as in Zephaniah 3:13. The worst temptation for a young Christian is to live carelessly or to walk in ways of his own choosing without the guarantee of divine protection, for the promise is to keep us in all His ways. May they watch and pray, and not resort to places or companionships where to pray Lead us not into temptation would be but shameful profanity.
We thank God in advance, believing according to Mark 11:23-24 that what we ask according to His will He heareth, and we ask all this in the precious and prevailing Name of Jesus, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.
