Son

Your prayer shows both deep love for your son and real exhaustion, and God hears that cry when you feel you cannot go on anymore. It is hard when every word seems to provoke anger and when screens and late nights have taken hold and nothing you try seems to work.

Scripture reminds us that the Lord who keeps Israel neither slumbers nor sleeps, and He keeps watch over you and over your son even in these long nights. At the same time we are called to guard ourselves and to stay awake and sober in our souls. To be in the day, as one homily says, depends on ourselves. It is in our power to watch and to be sober, not to let our eyes close to what is good. Sleep itself is a gift from God, but when it becomes disordered or when waking hours are given over to endless images and noise, it is like a drunkenness of the soul. Every excess can cloud the mind as wine does, making a person see things as in a dream and become inactive toward what is truly good. A life ordered by God, by contrast, brings a more peaceful sleep, a sleep that is composed and regular, because the heart is not weighed down and the soul is at rest.

Do not sink under this affliction, even though you have been worn down. Like those who sang praises at midnight in prison, you can still lift your voice to God in the night watches, and He will give you strength for the next step. Your son also needs that steady, loving watchfulness. Obedience is learned not in a moment but through patient, consistent love that reflects the obedience we ourselves owe to the Lord. It is not about harsh words that stir up more anger, but about calm, clear boundaries set with fear of God and love for your child, remembering that the power to stand firm depends in part on our own choice to remain steadfast and unmovable.

Pray that God would help you to set those boundaries with gentleness and firmness together, to limit screens and to keep a regular rhythm of rest, not as a punishment but as care for his body and soul. Ask Him to soften your son's heart so that correction does not feel like an attack, and to give you wisdom for when to speak and when to be silent. Keep your own heart guarded in prayer, bring your weariness to Christ each evening, and trust that He is working even when you see no change yet.

Let us pray. Lord Jesus Christ, You see this weary parent and this beloved son. Have mercy and grant rest that is peaceful and ordered. Help this son to turn from what keeps him awake and distracted, to love what is true and good, and to receive guidance with a willing heart. Give this parent patience, wisdom, and strength to persevere, to set loving limits without provoking anger, and to rest in Your keeping care through every night. Lead this home into watchfulness and sobriety and peace, for Your glory. Amen.
