The prayer you lift up for your son is a fragrant offering, for when a parent cries to the Heavenly Father on behalf of a child, it moves the very heart of God. You ask for guidance, wisdom, and favor, and in this you do well, because you are asking for what God Himself delights to give. Observe His lovingkindness: He did not merely promise to give His own Son for us, He first commanded Abraham to offer his son, so that when He gave the greatest gift, it might seem not a favor but the repayment of a debt. Such is the tenderness of God that He stoops to make us His partners in the drama of salvation. So when you intercede for your son, you are entering into that same divine economy where a parent's love becomes a channel of grace.
You pray for wisdom to attend him in this process. Remember that there is a wisdom of this world, which the rulers of this age count great, yet it is coming to nothing. It trusts entirely in itself and so becomes foolishness. There is another wisdom, hidden in mystery, which God ordained before the ages for our glory, and this is the wisdom found in Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. To ask for true wisdom for your son is to ask that he might see clearly, not by the dim light of human reasoning, but by the Spirit who searches the deep things of God. This wisdom seems folly to those who are perishing, but it alone brings profit that reaches beyond this fleeting life.
You ask also for peace and comfort to surround him. Now hear carefully what this peace means. The peace which Christ gives is not always a gentle calm that leaves every circumstance untouched. When the physician cuts away the incurable part, the body is preserved, and that is peace. When the mutinous element is removed, heaven is united to earth, and that is peace. The prophets proclaimed it, the angels sang it at His birth, for this above all is peace: the reconciliation of God and man through the severing of sin. If your son must walk through a season where bonds are tested or some false agreement is broken, do not be alarmed. Concord among robbers is no blessing, and the good discord that ends evil alliance is a work of God’s own peace. Praying for his peace means entrusting him to the surgeon’s knife if that is what love requires.
Finally, take courage that when you ask the Father in the name of the Son, you are honoring both. Every tongue shall confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. To glorify the Son is to glorify the Father who begat Him, perfect, wanting nothing, equal in power and goodness. The Father is not jealous of His Son’s honor; He rejoices in it. So your prayer, rising through Christ and returning to the Father, becomes a participation in the endless exchange of glory within the Holy Trinity. Stand firm in this, then, and do not waver. He who did not spare His own Son but gave Him up for us all, will He not also with Him graciously give your son every needed thing? The grace He bestows is not spent in a moment but remains perpetual, if we do not quench it. Let your prayer be bold, let your hope be anchored in the lovingkindness that exceeds all asking, and wait upon the God who arranges all things for the good of those who love Him.
