How good it is that you bring your son before the throne of grace in the time of his need. The very petition you have lifted is itself a token of that favor which the Lord delights to show, for He has given you a parent’s heart to plead, and He never plants such desires in vain. Those prayers are the breathings of His own Spirit, and they return not empty. You ask for guidance and wisdom for your son, rest assured, the path of the truly wise is marked out by the Lord, and He will lead him in the way of wisdom. That wisdom is not the cleverness of this world, which rushes headlong into mischief, nor is it the self-confidence of those who think they have strength enough to find their own way to heaven. No, the wisdom that comes from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and full of good fruit. It is found in bowing with submission to the will of God. When a soul takes the Lord for its guide, great principles are infused, a hatred of every evil thing, a leaning upon divine strength, and a holy caution that avoids haste, for haste is the breeder of a thousand ills. Tell your son to wait upon the Lord, to keep his steps from the path of the destroyer, and to let the will of God be his delight. Then, even as the eternal God Himself leads the van, his course shall be one of happiness and peace, for the Lord will go before him and prepare the way.
That peace you have asked for him, that comfort to surround him, this is no mean gift, but the very legacy of the Lord Jesus. “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you,” He said, and that peace is not the brittle truce which the world calls peace, but a deep, unruffled calm like that which dwells in the bosom of God Himself. It is peace through the blood of the cross, peace that whispers within the conscience because the treaty of reconciliation has been sealed. When the mind is stayed on God, that perfect peace becomes a present possession even in the whirl of thronging duties. Your son may be pressed by many cares in this process, yet in doing the will of Jesus there is rest. And should sorrows surge around him, let him bear them with his Savior, and then see what peace, what perfect peace, he shall enjoy. Even with loved ones far away, this peace holds true: in Jesus’ keeping we are safe, and they. So let your heart be comforted, dear petitioner, your son is not beyond the reach of the Good Shepherd’s care, nor can any circumstance sever him from the keeping of that loving hand.
There is a special mercy fitted for each of His children, as a fond father lays by a portion for every son in the household. The Lord has mapped out for your child a choice and particular blessing suited to his peculiar case, and you may trust that this very process is the road by which that favor shall be delivered. Behind every dispensation stands the God who gave His own dear Son for us, and if He has done that, how shall He not with Him freely give us all things? He takes infinite delight in loading His people with benefits, and He rests in His love with singing over them even while He works their salvation. The hammer of His omnipotence may smite the anvil of His wisdom, and worlds fly as sparks; but when He sets Himself to bless a soul, He does it with all His heart. Look then to Jesus, who is the sum and substance of every covenant mercy. As the Father gazes upon His Son with ineffable sweetness, so He looks upon all who are in Christ with that same delighted favor. For the sake of His beloved Son, He will grant wisdom, favor, peace, all that is needful. Only let your faith be anchored there, and you shall see that this world is ours, and worlds to come, and earth is but our lodge on the way to our heavenly home.
