How precious is that promise whispered to the trusting heart, "You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You." This peace is no mere quietness of circumstance, but the very peace of God, the blood-bought peace which Jesus gives. It is a peace that gleams with heavenly light even when sorrows surge round, and it is the portion of those whose trust is fixed wholly upon the Lord. Your cry for a hedge of protection is a clinging to this very truth, for the soul stayed on Jehovah is garrisoned by Omnipotence. The blood of Jesus whispers peace within, and that peace is a fortress against every assault of the evil one.
You have drawn water from the wells of salvation, and in this hour you are drawing again. Remember how Israel was brought forth with silver and gold, and there was not one feeble person among their tribes? That deliverance came when the lamb was slain. So now, the Ransom has been found, not by man, but by God Himself. The King's own Son has borne the penalty, and therefore, deliverance from every form of abuse and darkness is the sure inheritance of the blood-bought. When you bring your son before the Throne of Grace, you are pleading the merits of that finished sacrifice. The eternal purpose of Jehovah has decreed the hour of deliverance for His own, and not a moment too soon or too late shall it arrive. He who delivered us from the power of darkness and translated us into the kingdom of His dear Son, can surely command His angels concerning your child, to keep him in all his ways.
Consider old Jacob, who said, "Joseph is without doubt rent in pieces." What sorrow filled his heart, yet the Lord had a grand design of deliverance. The covenant was working all the while. And so it may be that the enemy shoots his arrows, even the poisoned dart that whispers, "God's ear is shut." But this is a lie of the pit! The Lord has not spared His own Son; how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things? The very temptation that hisses, "If you are a son," is but a battered weapon against the shield of faith. The Master silenced the adversary with a word, and He will yet make your son to hold his peace and come out from the oppressor's grip. After the temptation, angels ministered to the Savior; think not that you lack the equivalent of angelic ministry, for He shall give His angels charge over him.
The rod of chastening may fall even upon the beloved, for what son is he whom the Father chastens not? Yet this is not the abuse of the wicked one, but the refining hand of a loving God, a work altogether different. The Lord will expose the deeds of darkness, for He brings every hidden thing to light. In the meantime, rest in this: deliverance from the guilt of sin and deliverance from the power of sin are both the work of God, and He who began a good work will complete it. Wait upon the Lord in your closet; go not rambling round for peace, but stay at home with your God. The stones themselves would cry out if His redeemed held their peace, and your present declaration of trust, even in the storm, is a sweet note of praise. You shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the Lord, and this son, surrendered to the Keeper of Israel, shall be a trophy of Free Grace alone.
