You speak of worries that press upon your heart, and you ask for peace, for the silencing of the enemy who would breed doubt. Then hear the word of our Lord, who says to every soul that trusts in Him, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.” That was not for one woman alone, but for all who cast themselves upon Christ. The blood of Jesus whispers peace within, a peace not drawn from your own strivings, but from His finished work. When sorrows surge around, and fears arise like a stormy sea, remember that upon His bosom nothing but calm is found.
You fear that this trial might return, that you may be called to walk that dark path again. The future is not yours to see, but the Lord who has brought you through once is the same yesterday, today, and forever. He does not change. If He brought you out, He can keep you. And if He ordains a fresh tempest, He will be with you in it. You need not fear tomorrow; the peace He gives is a present possession. Stay your mind on Him, for He has promised, “You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You.” Let not your thoughts drift to the “what ifs,” but anchor them firmly on Christ.
You plead for reassurance, a word from the Lord that the matter is settled. Remember that assurance is a gift to be sought, not a prize to be earned by your own feelings. If you have believed, you are His. It is written, “He that believes and is baptized shall be saved.” You know you have trusted Christ; then rest in that truth. Do not let the deceiver whisper that your faith is too weak or your sins too many. Christ says, “Go in peace.” Is His word not enough? His peace is solid, founded on eternal truth, guaranteed by the God of holiness. When doubts arise, do not parley with them, but carry them directly to the throne of grace and say, “Lord, renew my peace. I am troubled, but You are unmoved, bless me with Your peace.”
You desire never to go through such an ordeal again. That is a natural cry of the heart, but place it in the hands of a wise Father. He knows which way you should go, and He will not put you through needless pain. If days of calm lie ahead, give thanks. If new trials come, He will not leave you. The rod is the token of the child of God; if you were not His, you might be left unchastened. Yet know this: even in the fiercest gale, the ship of your soul can go toward the haven of perfect peace, for Christ has His hand on the tiller. You are not a derelict vessel, but one guided by His eye.
So now, “go in peace.” As you go to your daily duties, as you face the memories and the fears, go in peace. Sing to yourself, “My heart is resting, O my God!” Let this peace last you all your life, until you hear His voice calling you home. Rejoice in the Lord always, and again I say, Rejoice. Perfect peace is yours, purchased by blood, spoken by the lips that cannot lie. Take it, and walk in it.
