Sobriety

We hear your heart’s cry for your significant other’s sobriety and transformation, and we join you in lifting this burden before the Lord. Addiction is a heavy chain, but the power of Jesus Christ is greater than any bondage. We must first address the nature of your relationship, as Scripture is clear that intimacy outside of marriage is not God’s design. The Bible calls this fornication, and it grieves the heart of God (1 Corinthians 6:18-20). We encourage you to prayerfully consider whether this relationship is honoring to Him or if it is enabling sin. Marriage is a sacred covenant between one man and one woman, and any romantic involvement should be pursued with the intention of honoring God’s design.

That said, we stand with you in praying for your significant other’s deliverance. The Word declares, "No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it" (1 Corinthians 10:13). Sobriety is possible through Christ, but it requires surrender to Him. If he has not yet placed his faith in Jesus, this is the first step, salvation through repentance and belief in the name of Jesus Christ, the only name by which we are saved (Acts 4:12). Without Christ, true transformation is impossible, for "if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old things have passed away. Behold, all things have become new" (2 Corinthians 5:17).

Let us pray together:

Heavenly Father, we come before You with heavy hearts, lifting up this man who is bound by addiction. Lord, we ask that You break the chains of substance abuse in his life by the power of Your Holy Spirit. Father, if he does not know You, reveal Yourself to him in a mighty way. Draw him to repentance and faith in Jesus Christ, for there is no other name by which he can be saved. If he is already Your child, awaken his spirit to the truth of Your Word and the freedom found in obedience to You.

We rebuke the spirit of addiction in the name of Jesus, declaring that it has no hold over him. We pray for a hunger and thirst for righteousness to replace the desire for substances. Surround him with godly men who will walk alongside him in accountability and truth. Give him the strength to resist temptation and the wisdom to flee from it. Lord, restore his relationship with his children, that he may be the father You have called him to be. Heal his mind, body, and spirit, and let him walk in the newness of life that only You can provide.

We also ask for Your guidance for the one who has submitted this request. Lord, give her discernment and wisdom to navigate this relationship in a way that honors You. If this relationship is not aligned with Your will, grant her the courage to walk away and trust You with the outcome. Let her heart be set on You alone, knowing that You are her ultimate provider and protector.

Father, we thank You for Your faithfulness and for the victory we have in Christ Jesus. We declare that this man will be set free, not by his own strength, but by the power of Your Spirit. May he become a testimony of Your grace and a vessel for Your glory. In Jesus’ mighty name we pray, Amen.

We encourage you to seek out a biblical, Christ-centered community that can support both of you in this journey. Accountability is crucial in overcoming addiction, and the local church is a place where healing and restoration can begin. If he is not yet saved, share the gospel with him boldly but gently, trusting that God will do the work of transformation. And remember, "Let us not be weary in doing good, for we will reap in due season, if we don’t give up" (Galatians 6:9). Keep praying, keep trusting, and keep standing on God’s promises. He is faithful.

We hear the ache behind your prayer, the longing for the man you love to be free, to be whole, to step into the father and partner God created him to be. It’s a weighty place to stand, carrying hope and fear at the same time. We stand with you in it.

Addiction rarely turns on a simple decision. It’s often a tangled knot of pain, genetics, isolation, and fractured coping. That doesn’t excuse it, but it helps us understand why willpower alone so often falls short. Real change usually needs more: a recovery community, skilled counseling, a willingness to face what’s underneath. You can’t walk his path for him, but you can guard your own heart while you wait. Many who love someone in addiction have found steady ground in a support group like Al‑Anon, not to fix him, but to find clarity, boundaries, and a place to breathe. Caring for your own soul is not selfish; it’s part of loving him well.

We join you in bringing this to Jesus, the one who sees every hidden struggle and every tear.

Lord, hold this woman close in the long nights of waiting. Break through the fog that holds her partner captive, and raise up the helpers, the honest voices, and the small moments of grace that open a door. Shield those children. Give her wisdom to know when to speak, when to be still, and when to hope. May Your mercy do what no human effort can. In Jesus’ name, amen.

It is a mercy that this man is not beyond the reach of your prayers, and it is no small thing that you have a heart to plead for his soul and body. Yet let us be sober-minded ourselves: a mere outward reformation is not enough. A man may for a season cast off his drunkenness, and yet remain a stranger to the grace of God. The heart knows its own bitterness, and the godless man often drowns his sorrows in the cup because he has no well of living water within. Without a new nature, the unclean spirit may depart for a little while, but he returns with seven more wicked than himself, and the last state is worse than the first.

The true cure for this poor soul is not merely to become a better man in his own strength, but to be made a new creature in Christ Jesus. He must be born again. No man has a right to claim God as his Father until he is begotten again by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. Pray, then, that the Lord would strip away every prop of self-righteousness and drive him to the cross. When the prodigal is truly hungry, he will arise and go to his Father. That Father’s house has room even for the drunkard who comes with a broken and contrite heart.

You speak of him becoming a better man for his children. It is a noble cry. How often in a family the ungodly Saul has been made into a holy Paul! Think of old Jacob, who for years thought his beloved Joseph torn by beasts, when all the while God was preserving him to be the salvation of the whole household. The case is not hopeless while there is a throne of grace and an interceding Savior. Cling to the promise, “I will be a God to thee and to thy seed after thee.” But mark this: the best gift you can give those children is a father whose life is hid with Christ in God, not a mere moral man whose reformation has no root. The fear of the Lord in a father is a strong confidence for his offspring.

Yet I must also speak plainly. A man and a woman coming together outside the holy covenant of marriage cannot expect the full smile of Heaven upon their union. God’s order is one man, one woman, in lifelong wedlock, and no prayer can rightly ask blessing upon a relationship that ignores His wise and loving law. While you may lawfully plead for his soul and for his deliverance from the power of sin, you must not ask God to smile upon what His Word condemns. If he is to become a true husband and father, let that path be entered in God’s own appointed way. A godly companion is a treasure, but how much more when the bond is hallowed by the Lord Himself!

Continue in prayer, for a good man in a house is a blessing to the family, and a praying woman may be the means of hedging that mansion about with mercies. Yet take heed that your own walk is close with your Lord, for the prayer of the righteous availeth much. Wait upon the Lord, who delights to turn sorrow into joy. He can make the crooked straight and use even the stench of the drunkard’s breath to bring him to the sweet savor of Christ. The man who now carries the heavy load of his sin may yet be strengthened by God in his inner man, and become a joyful witness of what grace can do.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Psalm 37:4: Delight yourself in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.
Matthew 6:33: But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

It is right to pray for this man’s sobriety, but let the prayer be joined to repentance rather than only to a more comfortable life. Drunkenness is a bitter slavery, yet the soul has no wound that cannot be healed. The great medicine is repentance. Let him not lie in the pit where he has fallen but stand up and contend again. I will ask God to break the love of drink in him, to give him the fear of God, and to make that fear a wall around his children.

But I must speak plainly because you call him your significant other. If he is not your husband, then the first step toward becoming a better man for God and for his children is not only sobriety but obedience. God gave marriage as a lifelong covenant of one man and one woman, and the union of the bed and the home belongs within it. I will not ask God to bless a union that stands outside His ordinance, but I will pray that this man repents, finds sobriety in Christ, and orders his life according to God’s commands. If he is your husband, then let the church help you carry this trial and call him to repentance without despair. In either case, seek godliness first, and do not build on a foundation that is not obedience to Christ.

I have prayed with you for his sobriety, and I will keep praying. But let me say plainly that sobriety alone is not enough. A man is more than an animal. He is made in the image of God, and there is a place in him that only God can fill. When a man tries to fill that place with drink or drugs or any other escape, it shows both that he has lost the sense of God and that he still longs for what he lost. That is why merely stopping is not the same as being made well.

Pray for more than sobriety. Pray that he comes to the end of himself and turns to Jesus Christ. Jesus is the one mediator between God and man. He became a man so that he could be the true redeemer. He alone can break the power of sin and make a man new. God can put his Spirit on a man and turn him into another man. That is what this man needs, not just a cleaner outward life but a new heart.

There is also danger in the road he is on. A man who turns away from godly relationships and resents those who love him enough to tell him the truth is heading down. God often surrounds a wandering man with people who care enough to warn him. If he pushes them all away, he is not getting better. Do not let fear of his anger keep you from speaking truth in love, and do not repeatedly rescue him from consequences. Real help does not shield a man from the harvest he is sowing.

Keep praying for his children as well. They need to see not just a sober man but a man who fears God, loves the Lord, and walks in humility. Their best hope is not that he becomes respectable but that he becomes redeemed. Pray that God gives him a hunger for holiness, surrounds him with godly men, and brings him to the point where he sees his need of Christ.
