Silas
Beloved of All
The restlessness you feel at night and the constant pull toward entertainment are not random annoyances. They point to a deeper spiritual reality. Your mind was made for communion with God, and when it turns to empty stimulation instead, sleep becomes elusive. The prophet spoke of people who listened to God's words as if they were just a pleasant song, hearing but never doing. Entertainment works the same way. It occupies the ears while leaving the heart unchanged, and it cannot give the peace that lets a person lie down in safety.
Scripture urges you to stay awake in a different sense: to be watchful and sober, not drifting into the stupor that marks those who live for the night. The commandment of the Lord is a lamp, and His teaching is light. When you sleep, that wisdom keeps you. When you awake, it speaks with you. Turn your mind to it before you close your eyes. Meditate on His promises, not on a screen. Ask Him to quiet your soul with the same authority that once caused a deep sleep to fall upon a king's guards, protecting David. He grants rest to those He loves.
A little folding of the hands to rest is not always laziness; sometimes it is trust. The Good Shepherd is the door of the sheepfold. No wolf can enter, and no sheep can wander out, except it cross over Him. As you surrender the night to Him, you can say in your heart that He stands guard. He will make you dwell safely, and there will be showers of blessing in their season, including the blessing of sleep. Whether you wake or sleep, you live together with Him. Let that truth be your final thought and your first comfort.
