Thank you for sharing this painful situation so honestly. I have heard your heart and I am praying with you.
What you describe is very heavy. When hurtful words and actions come from within a family, and especially from a sister who professes faith in Christ, the wound goes deep. Those inward cuts from the tongue often take far longer to heal than a physical wound. A cut on the skin quickly stops bleeding and in a few days you can hardly see it, but words spoken from anger, pride or deceit can keep hurting for months and years. Scripture speaks often about the power of the tongue to wound, and about how pride brings a person low while humility brings honor. It is right to take this seriously and to bring it to the Lord for healing.
It is also important to understand what true forgiveness and true repentance look like. There are many who carry the name Christian while continuing in patterns that contradict the gospel of grace. The gospel is not a way to say I will do what I want and then simply ask God to forgive me with no change of heart. The Scripture shows that before forgiveness there is a heavy conviction of sin, a honest acknowledging of sin before God, and then the happiness of having the burden and guilt lifted. That forgiveness is real and glorious through faith in Jesus Christ, and it is the greatest miracle God does in any life, far greater than any other healing. Yet even when God forgives, there are often still consequences and a need for a changed life going forward. We see this when David was forgiven but still faced trouble in his own house, and when his son was forgiven and restored to relationship yet soon turned again to conspire against his father. Tears or strong emotion alone are not repentance. One can weep, feel sorrow, even tear his clothes as a sign of grief, and then go back to the same behavior with no real change. That is only an emotional experience. True repentance means a work of God deep in the spirit that brings a change in actions.
For that reason, becoming a Christian is not proven by words alone but by a changed life. If your sister professes Christ but continues in emotionally abusive and hurtful behavior toward your parents, you and your other sister, she needs the same thing we all need, a deep work of God, honest conviction, confession, and a turning away from those patterns. We can pray for that freedom for her, and also for ourselves, because all of us have dysfunctional ways that need the transforming power of Christ.
You also asked about not wanting a relationship with her right now. That feeling is understandable when you have been hurt repeatedly and recently. Scripture teaches that love, the agape love that comes from God, is long suffering and kind, and that forgiveness is not a matter of mathematics where we count up to seventy times seven and then stop. It is an attitude of the heart that does not keep a ledger of wrongs. Jesus taught Peter this to show that forgiveness is a matter of the spirit. But long suffering does not mean we pretend no harm was done or that we immediately restore the same level of closeness and trust. Forgiveness can be given before God, releasing the person from your vengeance and entrusting justice to Him, while reconciliation and restored fellowship require repentance, honesty, and proven change over time. Love is kind, but it is not unwise, and it does not enable continued abuse. It is right to have boundaries that protect you and your family while you pray and seek wisdom.
Your spiritual thirst and your emotional pain cannot be satisfied by simply finding a better relationship or by chasing one emotional experience after another. Only God Himself can satisfy the thirst of the spirit. People often try to fill that thirst with material things or with new emotional experiences, thinking a new person or a new feeling will finally bring peace, but it never lasts. Come to Jesus Himself to drink. He alone bore our griefs and infirmities, as Isaiah prophesied and Matthew confirmed when he saw Jesus healing the sick and the oppressed. He has power in the physical realm, in the emotional realm, and in the spiritual realm, and He is able to command what oppresses us. Sometimes He heals instantly, sometimes healing is gradual, the only gradual healing recorded in the Gospels reminds us that God is not confined to one pattern. All true healing, whether sudden or step by step, whether of body, mind or heart, is from Him, and He understands the slow process of mending inward wounds.
The Holy Spirit gives help as He wills, and we can earnestly desire His best work in us, but the better way above all gifts is love. Ask Him to pour that love into you so you can forgive as you have been forgiven, without keeping score, and also to give you discernment, humility, and strength to walk in truth.
I am praying for you, for your parents and your other sister, and for your sister who has caused this hurt.
Father, in the name of Jesus Christ, I bring this family before You. You see the history of hurtful words and actions, and the fresh wounds that are still tender. You know the truth about each heart, including the one who is praying now. Bring deep conviction where there is sin, and bring honest confession. Grant the forgiveness that comes only through the blood of Jesus, and let it produce real change, not just emotion. Heal the inward cuts that have lingered for years. You bore our infirmities and carried our sorrows, so touch these emotional wounds and bring Your gradual and complete healing. Teach us to love with Your agape love, to be long suffering and kind, to forgive without counting, and to walk in wisdom with humble hearts. Set each of us free from any dysfunctional pattern that dishonors You, and make us more like Christ. Give guidance about boundaries and next steps, and let Your peace guard this home. Amen.
Please keep seeking the Lord, stay rooted in His Word, and if possible seek wise and godly counsel from a mature believer who can walk with you personally through boundaries and healing. You are not alone, and God is faithful to continue His healing work in you.
