Good and Faithful Servant
Please pray for me about my sister. She has been emotionally abusive to my parents, myself and my other sister in the past and recently she did something very hurtful to me. She also just may have done something else hurtful to me just now. I really don't know that I want a relationship with her. She is a professing Christian. Please pray about people who have personality disorders and dysfunctional behaviors. Pray for their freedom - myself included if I have some. Thank you.

We hear your pain and we join with you in bringing this difficult situation with your sister before the Lord together in Jesus name. It is deeply hurtful when someone close to us, especially a family member who professes to be a Christian, continues in patterns of emotional abuse toward parents and siblings and causes fresh wounds. We grieve with you over what has happened in the past and what has just happened again, and we understand your uncertainty about whether you even want a relationship with her right now.

The Bible is clear that abusive speech and behavior are sin and not the fruit of a transformed life. Jesus said you will know them by their fruits Matthew 7:16 and that out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks Luke 6:45. Harsh, manipulative, or emotionally abusive words grieve the Holy Spirit and are to be put away Ephesians 4:29-31. At the same time we are called to be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you Ephesians 4:32 and to bear with one another and forgive as the Lord forgave you Colossians 3:13. Forgiveness from the heart is commanded for every believer, but forgiveness does not automatically mean immediate reconciliation or trust without repentance. Scripture also teaches if it is possible, as much as it is up to you, be at peace with all men Romans 12:18 and to not be deceived that evil companionships corrupt good morals 1 Corinthians 15:33. There are times when loving boundaries are necessary and biblical. We are warned not to make friends with an angry man and not to associate with a hot-tempered person lest you learn his ways Proverbs 22:24-25.

We also want to gently address that your request did not mention the name of Jesus Christ. We want to remind you that it is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father, for Jesus said I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me John 14:6 and there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved Acts 4:12. If we confess with our mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in our heart that God raised him from the dead, we will be saved Romans 10:9. It is by that name we pray and find healing and freedom, and we encourage you to bring every hurt directly to Him.

We do rebuke the pattern of emotional abuse you have described, whether in your sister or in any of us, because God desires truth and love in our relationships. And we also examine ourselves as you have humbly invited us to do. We all need the Lord to search us and try us Search me, God, and know my heart. Try me, and know my thoughts. See if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the everlasting way Psalm 139:23-24. Dysfunctional behaviors and what the world may label as personality disorders are ultimately patterns of the flesh and wounds of the heart that need the healing and renewing work of God. We are not to be conformed to this world but to be transformed by the renewing of our mind Romans 12:2 and to put on the new self which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its Creator Colossians 3:10. True freedom comes as we walk in the Spirit and bear his fruit which is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, gentleness, and self-control Galatians 5:22-23.

We encourage you to continue to pursue godly counsel, perhaps a mature pastor or a biblical Christian counselor, and to follow the pattern of Matthew 18:15 when sin is against you, to go and address it privately in love, and if there is no repentance, to involve wise and trusted help. Honoring your parents Exodus 20:12 does not mean enabling abuse toward them or yourself. Loving your sister means desiring her repentance and restoration while also protecting your heart and your family from ongoing harm. The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit Psalm 34:18.

We pray together for you now. Father in heaven we come before you in the precious name of Jesus Christ our Lord. We lift up this dear one who is wounded and weary from repeated hurt from her sister. We ask you to heal her heart, to comfort her with your presence, and to guard her from bitterness or resentment. Give her wisdom to forgive as you have forgiven her and discernment to set healthy and loving boundaries that honor you. We pray for her parents and her other sister that you would bring peace and healing to the whole family. We lift up her sister to you. You see her heart and her behaviors. We ask that you convict her where there is sin, bring her to genuine repentance, and transform her by your Holy Spirit. Set her free from any patterns of emotional abuse, pride, anger, or dysfunction, and cause her to walk in love and truth as a true follower of Christ. And Father we ask that you search each of us and reveal any dysfunctional or sinful patterns in us, and set us free as well. Renew our minds, heal our wounds, and make us more like Jesus. We ask that you lead this family toward either healthy reconciliation if there is true repentance, or toward peace with appropriate distance if not, all according to your will. We trust you to be our healer, our counselor, and our refuge. We ask all these things in Jesus name, amen.

We encourage you to keep casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you 1 Peter 5:7, to remain in prayer and in the Word, and to not walk this road alone but with trusted believers who can support you and keep you accountable. The Lord is faithful to complete the good work he has begun in you Philippians 1:6.

We've been holding your request before the Lord and we can hear how painful and confusing this is. Loving your sister while also feeling hurt again so recently, and wondering whether you even want to continue the relationship, is a heavy place to be, especially when family and shared faith make it more complicated.

What you described, the ongoing belittling and control that wears down a person's sense of worth, can leave a deeper mark than a single hurtful moment, and it makes sense you would feel perplexed and wary. Wanting freedom for both of you, including honestly asking God to show you any unhealthy patterns in yourself, is a humble and brave prayer.

One thing that has helped others in similar situations is learning that choosing to release resentment before God is not the same as rebuilding closeness. Reconciliation needs safety, consistent change and time, and it is okay to take space while you seek wisdom.

It could help to talk this through one on one with a trusted pastor or Christian counselor who understands emotional abuse, rather than trying to sort it out together with your sister right now. Having someone to help you name what is happening, think through boundaries that protect your peace and dignity, and pray with you for clear next steps can bring steadiness. We encourage that kind of support alongside prayer, not instead of it.

Father, we bring this sister and her family to You. Guard her heart and mind, heal what has been torn down, and give her wisdom to set loving, firm boundaries. Bring freedom and growth where it is needed for each person involved, and lead her step by step as she seeks You. In Jesus' name we pray, amen.

Your sorrow has been heard, and the Lord who sees in secret knows the weight you carry concerning your sister and your family. To be wounded by one of your own household, and to feel that wound repeated, brings a peculiar grief, and it is right that you should bring it before God in prayer.

There is a word that meets you in this place of pain, and it is this, There is forgiveness with God. It is not a forgiveness that you must search out or hope may possibly exist, it is a certainty made sure by the blood of Christ. I, even I, am He that blotteth out thy transgressions. When the heart is heavy with sin, whether the sin done against you or the sin that may yet cling to your own spirit, that whisper drives away despair. There is forgiveness now, at this moment, for the chief of sinners, and it is divine forgiveness, complete and surprising, the tally destroyed and the record nailed to the Cross. It is given not upon conditions of merit, but to every repenting and believing sinner who looks to Jesus.

And with that forgiveness comes healing, for healing and pardon are placed in happy conjunction. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations, and the least thing about Christ is healing. His leaves change the life blood and make the nature other than it was before. You ask rightly to pray for freedom from personality disorders and dysfunctional behaviors, for yourself as well as for others, for all individuals in every nation need healing. There is an abundance of healing power in Jesus Christ, not only to forgive the guilt of sin but to break its power and to renew the inward parts. What habit or infirmity of temper, what cruelty or coldness learned in a fallen nature, cannot His grace subdue when He dwells in the heart.

You ask also about forgiveness toward your sister. Hear the pattern set before us, Even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. We who have had so much forgiven, so much outward and inward sin blotted out, ought to find it natural to open our hands to forgive. This forgiveness which God has given us for Christ's sake is an eternal forgiveness, He does not forgive and afterwards accuse, and He calls us to a joint stock business of mutual forgiveness, forgiving one another from the heart. To forgive as Christ forgave is gloriously ennobling, for revenge is paltry but forgiveness is great minded.

Yet to forgive is not to say that no wound was given, nor does it require you to pretend that trust is restored where repentance has not been shown. Forgiveness releases the debt into the hands of God, it refuses bitter revenge and commits the cause to Him who judges righteously. Reconciliation and close fellowship, however, require truth and repentance and a new walk. If your sister professes Christ while continuing in emotional abuse, she must be called with love to see her need of that same forgiveness and healing. It is wise in such sorrows to seek godly counsel, the help of a faithful pastor and mature believers who can walk with you, help you set needful boundaries for the protection of your parents, your other sister and yourself, and help you discern how to love without enabling further hurt.

Let us pray together.

O Lord our God, with whom there is forgiveness, we come through Jesus Christ Thy Son who died the Just for the unjust to bring us to God. We thank Thee that there is forgiveness, broad and unlimited, with no qualifying words, for all who repent and believe. Lord, forgive us our iniquities as we forgive those who have trespassed against us. Apply to this wounded heart the healing leaves of the Tree of Life, and let the Sun of Righteousness rise with healing in His wings.

We bring before Thee this sister. Thou knowest her heart, her profession, and her deeds. If she has sinned against Thee and against her family, grant her true sight of sin and true repentance, and the freedom that only Christ can give from every dysfunctional and destructive way. Break the bondage of long habit and heal what is diseased within.

We bring before Thee the one who prays, with parents and sister who have also been hurt. Give wisdom to know how to forgive even as Christ forgave, and how to love with holiness and prudence. Guard from bitterness on one hand and from a false peace on the other. Grant freedom also where there may be any fault or infirmity in this dear soul, and make the nature new by Thy Spirit. Teach what it is to dwell where Jesus dwells, where the inhabitant shall not say, I am sick, because iniquity is forgiven.

Lead this family into counsel that is faithful to Thy Word, into safety and into truth, and let all be done to Thy glory. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ our only Saviour. Amen.
