The knowledge of God is not sufficient by itself; we need besides this a most exact life and conversation. To intercede for others is a good work, but if you entrust those prayers to a creature rather than to the Creator, what hope of salvation do you have? You have put on the garb of a suppliant, but you risk darting out against yourself the shafts of the wicked one. Let there be nothing secular, nothing earthy in your soul when you speak of spiritual things. Turn away entirely from this misdirected veneration, which is a stain that must be washed away by repentance and tears.
Your hope and the hope of your household lies nowhere else but in the mercy of God. Not by works of righteousness which you have done, but according to His mercy He saved us through the washing of regeneration and the renewing of the Holy Ghost, which He shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour.
