Selling My Mother’s House

It is good that you are bringing this decision before the Lord and asking for His wisdom rather than simply moving ahead on your own. A house carries so much more than walls and a roof. It holds memories and family history, and the step of selling it can feel weighty.

Scripture often speaks of a house in that deeper sense. Jacob called the place where he first met God Bethel, which means house of God, because there he became aware of God's presence. Later that same place was called the house of idols when people turned from worshiping God to worshiping what they had made. The contrast is a reminder that a building itself is not what makes a place holy. What matters is whether we are seeking God there.

Solomon understood this when he built the temple. He prayed that even the heavens cannot contain God, so no house built by human hands could ever hold Him. Yet God chose to meet His people there as a house of sacrifice and a house of prayer. Jesus later said His Father's house is to be a house of prayer. The value of any house is ultimately found in seeking the Lord in it and through it.

That is why the most important part of your request is that you want what is truly in your best interest according to God's will. Others in Scripture sought guidance from empty things, from idols or superstitious practices, instead of seeking the counsel of God. You are doing the right thing by asking for the wisdom of God and the guidance of God for your life and for this practical decision.

We will pray with you that the Lord will give you clear direction, peace, and provision in His timing. That He will show you whether to begin the process now or to wait, and that you will know His leading not by pressure or by what seems profitable in the moment, but by His quiet counsel. People can be tempted to trade what is lasting for a quick gain, but you are looking to honor Him with this stewardship.

Father, we bring this family and this home before You. You know the history in this house and the love that has been there. We ask for Your mercy and Your care over every next step. Grant wisdom to know what is best, unity in the family, and peace about timing. If it is Your will to sell, we ask that You prepare the way, provide the right buyer at the right price, and remove obstacles. If it is not yet Your will, give contentment to wait and clarity to understand why. Above all, let this decision be guided by seeking You first, trusting that You save and provide not by human striving alone but by Your own hand. We ask this in the name of Jesus, Amen.
