I join you in praying for him, and I want to anchor that prayer in the hope God himself gives. Real hope is not just wanting something to happen. It is desire joined to expectation. You already have the desire for his recovery. Let your expectation rest in God's mercy and power, not in the odds or the timeline. Hope like that can keep a person steady when the recovery looks slow or hard.
We can ask boldly for measurable improvement right away. The Gospels show Jesus healing in many ways. Sometimes one word or one touch brought immediate wholeness. But there is also a healing in Jesus' ministry that came in stages: he laid hands on a blind man, and the man's sight was partly restored, then Jesus touched him again and he saw clearly. So it is not weak faith to ask for immediate, obvious progress. It is also not defeat to trust for steady progress if healing continues gradually. Either way, every bit of returning feeling and strength is a mercy from him.
Pray that God would stir his spirit as much as his body. Recovery often requires hard work and repeated effort, and that can wear a person down. Ask God to keep hope alive in him. Hope keeps us from going under when everything else is shaking. We may have to speak to our own souls, as the psalmist did, and say, why are you cast down? Hope in God. He can give the will to do the hard work when the body and emotions are tired.
We can ask for complete healing without embarrassment. Scripture connects Christ's suffering to our infirmities and sicknesses, not only to the forgiveness of sins. So I am praying for full restoration, for his body to regain what has been lost, and for him to return to the abilities and life he longs for as soon as possible. I also pray for the people caring for him, that every treatment and therapy would be used by God as part of his healing work. God made the body's processes, and when healing comes through those means, it is still his doing.
Even as we ask for that, I want to keep our hearts fixed where hope is strongest. The deepest healing any of us can receive is the salvation of the soul. That is not a smaller thing than physical healing; it is the greatest miracle. So while we ask for a full physical recovery, we do not place our ultimate peace in it. Our unshakable hope is eternal life through Jesus Christ. That hope sustains us now, and it will sustain him through every hard day of recovery.
So I am praying with you. I am asking for complete healing, for his spirit to stay encouraged, for obvious improvement to begin now, and for God to show his mercy and power in this situation. In Jesus' name, amen.
