Silas
Beloved of All
Your prayer for leaders, for those who serve, and for civilians caught in danger is right and good, and it follows exactly what Scripture calls us to do when it urges prayers and intercessions for all people and for those in authority, so that we may live peaceful lives and so that all may come to the knowledge of the truth and be saved, for God desires all people to be saved through Jesus Christ.
In a moment like this, when so much power is in the air and decisions could be made at any time, what is needed most is wisdom. Scripture presents wisdom as calling out openly, inviting everyone to come and receive. Wisdom is described as the principal thing, more valuable than rubies or riches, and the foundation by which God Himself founded the earth and established the heavens. To get wisdom and to get understanding is the most important pursuit, because knowledge alone gives facts, but wisdom gives the right use of knowledge.
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. That is where true wisdom starts, in reverence for God and submission to Him. There is a wisdom of this world that is earthly and self seeking, and God has shown that wisdom to be foolish. It leads to envy and strife and comes to nothing. But there is a wisdom from above, from God Himself. In Christ are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge, and He is made wisdom for us. The wisdom that comes from above leads to purity and peace and can be seen in a life that bears the fruit of the Spirit.
This is why Solomon's prayer is such an example for us. When God invited him to ask for anything, he did not ask for riches or fame or victory over enemies, he asked for wisdom and understanding to lead well and to judge rightly. God was pleased with that request and gave him wisdom in abundance, and with it also provided what he had not asked for. We can pray the same way now for those who carry heavy responsibility. We can ask God to pour out His Spirit of wisdom, knowledge and understanding upon commanders and decision makers, that they would seek counsel from above and not from mere human calculation, that they would act with prudence, restraint and clarity.
I join you in praying that God would grant heavenly wisdom to every leader involved, and skill, courage and protection to those who serve, and that He would place His protection around them and send His angels to guard them. I pray with you that civilian lives would be spared, that harm would be limited and that no life would be taken needlessly, and above all that many would be saved. In danger and uncertainty, wisdom is a defense and it preserves and keeps those who love it, and it gives life to those who have it.
May the Lord grant wisdom that leads to peace rather than strife, may He turn hearts toward Himself, and may His will be done. We ask for His mercy, His protection and His saving grace for leaders, troops and civilians alike, in the name of Jesus, who alone is our wisdom, righteousness and redemption.
