Chrysostom
Beloved of All
Your heartfelt burden for leaders, troops, and civilians in so many nations is good and pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, who wants all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. We join you in lifting up prayers, petitions, intercessions and thanksgivings for all people, for commanders, prime ministers, military leaders, and for all in authority, so that we may lead peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and dignity, as 1 Timothy 2:1 to 4 teaches.
We pray with you for the salvation that is through Jesus Christ alone, for Jew and Gentile, for people of every tribe and tongue, that they would repent and believe the gospel and be reconciled to God. We ask that the Lord would draw many to Himself, that the gospel would go forth with freedom and clarity and that disciples would be made in every nation.
We also pray for peace, knowing that peace is the mother of all good things and the foundation of joy. Christ Himself is the King of righteousness and the King of peace, who came to set at peace the things in heaven and on earth. The peacemakers are called sons of God, because they follow Him. In every gathering the Church prays for peace and pronounces peace, because where peace is lacking everything is overturned, but where it is present there is health and order.
In that light we pray for wisdom and restraint for those in authority. God has ordained governing authorities for good order in this present life, to keep guard, to beat off enemies, to hinder those who stir up sedition, and to put an end to strife among people. We ask God to guide leaders like water in His hand, to grant them wisdom to know what to say and how to say it, humility to seek counsel, and courage to act justly. We ask for protection for troops and for civilians, that life would be preserved wherever possible, that harm to the innocent would be prevented, and that any use of force would be directed with precision and justice toward military targets only, not toward people made in the image of God.
We also recognize that not every agreement is a good agreement, since even robbers can agree together, and that true peace is not simply the absence of conflict but the presence of righteousness. As a physician preserves the body by removing what is incurably diseased, so lasting peace sometimes requires the removal of what destroys peace. Therefore we pray for godly alliances among free nations to be strengthened, for evil alignments to lose influence, for false teaching and persecution to be brought to nothing, and for freedom of speech and press to be used to proclaim the truth of Christ.
We pray for the peace of Jerusalem and for all peoples you named, in the Middle East, in Europe, Africa, Asia, the Americas and the islands of the sea, including Israel, its neighbors, Ukraine, Russia, and Taiwan and the surrounding region, and for our own land. We ask for angelic protection, for loving kindness and truth to guard both leaders and people, and for the Lord to thwart the plans of the wicked while working all things after the counsel of His will for good to those who love Him.
May the Lord grant protection to civilians who are vulnerable, expose threats before they cause harm, comfort those who have suffered great loss, and raise up leaders who will pursue justice with mercy. Above all, may He grant repentance and faith, that many would be saved, and may His peace guard hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.
We thank God that Christ in us is greater than all opposition, and we continue to pray with thanksgiving, trusting that He hears and reigns, and that His kingdom of righteousness and peace will endure. In Jesus name we pray, amen.
