Chrysostom
Beloved
Do not merely ask others to pray, but become a fellow-worker with God for the salvation of those two lost souls. The acceptable time is now; the day of salvation is at hand. The Apostle entreats you not to receive the grace of God in vain, and so I entreat you: let not this grace lie idle in you while those around you perish. Exhort them daily while it is still called Today, for you also are able to edify your brother. The common salvation has been placed into the hands of each one of us.
Never despair of their conversion, however far off they seem. The devil, that wicked monster, never despairs of our destruction; it would be our great condemnation if we, who have tasted the loving-kindness of the Lord, should give up hope for their salvation. They wander because they do not know the Scriptures and the power of God. But you know: the Teacher learned obedience through His sufferings and became the Author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him. Show them this obedience by your own patience and kindness. Suffer for their sakes, bearing with their slowness, for the elect’s sake, that they too may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.
And be watchful lest any root of bitterness spring up in you to hinder your witness. Do not set your hope on uncertain riches or seek the applause of men for your piety; that turns the medicine into a display. But with humility and genuine love, press forward, looking diligently lest any man come short of the grace of God. The time is short, and the labor is not for a trivial thing. Work together with Him, and you will see the power of God bring those who are lost into the light.
