Rental Arrears

The weight of these arrears presses upon you like a dream that threatens to become a lasting reality, but I ask you, why do you stare at the figures as if the matter rested on your own shoulders alone? When the disciples saw the multitude and the desolate place, they said, “Whence should we have so many loaves?” They saw only the wilderness, not the Provider hidden within it. You see the debt, but the Master asks you to entreat Him urgently for the supply.

Make provision for the flesh, but only to fulfill its necessities, not to let the care of them kindle a furnace of anxiety within you. To pay what is owed for shelter is a needful thing; to be consumed with fear over it is to go beyond necessaries and spoil what should nourish your faith. I do not forbid you to seek relief, but I command you not to be deceived by the thought that this burden is beyond His reach. Many say, “This is impossible,” and so make the Lord seem distant, when He has already approached the very door.

Let your prayer be not a faint whisper, but a cry that rises from the knowledge that He is the friend of your soul, and the matter is urgent. He may seem to you to sleep while the arrears crowd in, but it is precisely so that He may rouse you to entreat Him with boldness. Do not let the enemy deceive you into thinking that the Scriptures and the promises are silent on your need. The strong soldier does not merely protect himself; he draws his comrade out of danger. You are not alone in this trial, so stand firm and do not be disobedient to the charge I give you: cast off this heavy slumber, for the present anxiety is a shadow. Seek one thing only, to have your body in health and your soul fixed on Him, and all these other things, like the star over the house, will come to rest right where the provision is found.

The weight of bills and overdue rent can feel like deep water closing over your head. You see the numbers, you know what is owed, and you have no idea how to meet it. That kind of pressure makes your heart race the moment you look at the stack of mail or check your account. You are not alone in that feeling, and you are not wrong to cry out to God right where you are.

The Scripture shows us something vital about how God works. In the law given to Israel, God made a specific provision for the cleansing of a leper. Leprosy was an incurable condition; yet God gave instructions for what to do on the day a leper was cleansed. He left room for Himself to do a miracle. He did not box Himself in to human impossibility. So when you pray about these arrears and bills, do not assume there is no way through. God is not limited by your paycheck or the state of the economy. Allow Him room to work in ways you have not thought of yet. He is fully able to make a path where right now you see only a wall.

At the same time, be careful not to make provision for the flesh in your desperation. When the pressure mounts, the temptation can come to grab at any solution, to justify something shady because it seems like a windfall dropped in your lap. But walking after the Spirit means refusing to make that kind of provision, even when the bills are shouting loudly. The enemy would love to trap you in a spiritual snare under the cover of financial relief. Put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and determine that your deliverance will come in a way that honors Him, not in a way that compromises your conscience.

Remember, too, the only provision God has made for your sin. That provision is Jesus Christ. The Spirit bears witness that forgiveness is found in no one else. If you have trusted in Him, then your standing with God is not based on you paying a debt He owes. God is a debtor to no man. Your righteousness before Him is by faith, a gift of grace, not a wage you have earned. This same God who gave His only Son for your eternal need is attentive to your temporal need. He hears you. Bring this rent, these bills, before Him with honesty and humility, not as though He is distant or unconcerned. He knows what it is to suffer. He knows what it is to have nowhere to lay His head.

The early church knew financial hardship as well. The believers in Jerusalem were poor, yet grace moved among them so that they gave generously to one another in their affliction. That kind of care reflects the heart of God. He sees your distress, and He is not panicked by the size of the debt. His work does not depend on you sending in a certain amount to prevent a crisis. He is not filing for bankruptcy. Rest in that truth. You can ask Him for relief without trying to manipulate Him.

So pray with confidence. Ask the Lord to make a way for what you owe. Then walk in obedience. Be faithful in what you can do, however small. Shun the shortcuts that belong to the darkness. Trust that your salvation is nearer than when you first believed, and that the God who provided the sacrifice for your sin can surely provide the rent for this month. Make no provision for the flesh, but make every provision for faith. He is listening.

May the Lord bless you with His peace that surpasses all understanding as you continue to seek Him through His Son, Jesus Christ. May He strengthen your faith and remind you that He is your Provider, your Jehovah Jireh. We pray all these things in the powerful name of Jesus. Amen.
