Disciple of Prayer
Good morning, I ask that you please say a prayer for me and my girlfriend. Thank you so much. We’ve been dealing with issues and I just need her to know that my intentions with her are pure and that the devil fights me a lot because I live for Jesus. Please pray that she remembers "Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate." Thank you so much.

We thank you for sharing your heart with us and for your desire to live for Jesus and to honor Him in your relationship. We join with you in prayer and we appreciate that you have mentioned the name of Jesus, for it is only through Him that we have access to the Father and it is in His name that we are saved and heard, as it is written Acts 4:12 and John 14:6.

We want to encourage you and also gently correct an important understanding about the scripture you quoted. You asked that she remember Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate Mark 10:9, see also Matthew 19:6. In context this verse speaks specifically about marriage, the lifelong covenant between a man and a woman that God Himself joins together Genesis 2:24. A dating or courtship relationship, even a serious one, is not yet a marriage. We believe in the sanctity of marriage as a lifelong commitment between a man and a woman, and we view being a boyfriend and girlfriend as courtship with the goal of discerning marriage to another Christian believer. We strongly endorse pursuing godly marriage when it is according to God's will, rather than simply remaining in a relationship without that purpose. So we encourage you not to apply that promise as if you are already married, but instead to seek the Lord to know if He is truly joining you together in marriage, and to pursue that covenant in His timing and way.

We also rejoice that you want your intentions to be pure. Pure intentions are shown by Christlike love and actions, not only words, as described in 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 and Ephesians 5:25. If you are to be a godly future husband, love her as Christ loved the church, with patience, kindness, selflessness, and protection. Part of that purity is keeping yourselves sexually pure before marriage. Scripture is clear that we are to flee sexual immorality 1 Corinthians 6:18 and that marriage should be held in honor among all, and the marriage bed be undefiled, but God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterers Hebrews 13:4. Sex before or outside marriage is fornication and is outside God's will. If there has been any compromise in this area we urge you to repent, to confess, and to commit anew to purity, for God is faithful to forgive when we confess 1 John 1:9. We also encourage you to be equally yoked, that both of you are truly believing followers of Jesus 2 Corinthians 6:14, because a marriage that honors God must be built on shared faith.

You mentioned that the devil fights you a lot because you live for Jesus. We understand that spiritual opposition is real. Our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world’s rulers of the darkness of this age, and against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places Ephesians 6:12. The adversary prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour 1 Peter 5:8, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will be persecuted 2 Timothy 3:12. Yet we are not without hope, for if we submit ourselves to God and resist the devil, he will flee from us James 4:7. Living for Jesus will bring testing, but God will give you grace to stand firm.

We also encourage you toward honest, gentle communication with her. Speak the truth in love Ephesians 4:15 and let your speech be with grace Colossians 4:6. A soft answer turns away wrath Proverbs 15:1. Pray together, seek godly counsel from mature believers, and commit your way to the Lord, trusting Him to direct your paths Proverbs 3:5-6.

We pray together for you both now.

Father, we come before You in the precious name of Jesus and we lift up this brother and his girlfriend to You. Lord, You know the issues they have been dealing with and the burden on his heart to be understood and to walk purely before You. We ask that You grant them both wisdom and discernment James 1:5, that they may seek Your will above their own desires and that they may seek first Your Kingdom and Your righteousness Matthew 6:33. If it is Your will for them to be joined in marriage, make that clear, strengthen their love, and lead them toward a holy covenant that honors You. If it is not Your will, give them grace to accept Your direction and to follow You with peace. Help them to guard their hearts and bodies in purity according to 1 Thessalonians 4:3-4, to flee temptation, and to honor one another with Christlike love. Protect them from the schemes of the enemy, clothe them with Your armor Ephesians 6:11, and help them to submit to You and resist the devil. Give the young woman a clear understanding of his intentions and give him the words and actions to communicate love with honesty and humility. Heal any hurt, restore trust where it has been broken, and let Your peace which surpasses all understanding guard their hearts and thoughts in Christ Jesus Philippians 4:7. We trust that You work all things together for good for those who love You Romans 8:28. We ask all this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

We encourage you to continue to pray without ceasing, to stay in the Word daily, and to seek accountability and counsel in your local church. Keep your eyes on Jesus, pursue purity and godliness, and trust the Lord to establish your steps as you seek a marriage that honors Him.

Thank you for letting us pray with you. We can hear how much you want to honor Jesus and how much you care for your girlfriend, and how painful it is when issues come between you and your intentions are misunderstood.

One thing we have found helpful when intentions feel unclear to the other person is that consistency over time speaks louder than a single conversation. How we listen, our tone, our body language and our follow through often communicate as much as the words we say. It can help to ask her gently what would help her feel secure, and then really listen without rushing to defend yourself, and let your actions line up with what you have shared.

It may also help to invite a trusted, mature believer who knows you both to walk alongside you for wisdom and perspective as you seek God's direction for the future.

We are carrying you both before the Lord.

Father, we thank You for this young man who wants to live for You. We ask You to give him and his girlfriend wisdom, clarity and peace as they work through these issues. Help them to communicate with honesty and grace and to seek Your will above all. Guard them from the enemy's discouragement and draw each of them closer to Jesus. In Jesus' name, amen.

Your prayer has been heard and there is much to commend in your longing to live for Jesus and to have pure intentions. It is a right desire to spiritualize the secular till the purity of your motives and the sanctity of your conscience in ordinary pursuits shall cause the division to vanish, and to have both charity and purity, the two great garments of Christianity, seen in your life. Yet charity without purity will be of no use, for without holiness no man shall see the Lord.

You quote the words, Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate. Those words of our Lord speak of the covenant of marriage, that lifelong union of one man and one woman which God Himself joins. While you are not yet in that covenant, that promise is not to be applied as if dating itself were marriage. The right prayer is not that God would merely preserve a relationship as it is, but that He would make you both holy, keep you from sin, and make His will plain whether He would indeed join you together in that holy estate in His time and way.

You rightly perceive that you are in a conflict and that the devil fights against those who would live for Jesus. Remember that the same trial may be both a temptation and a trial, a temptation from Satan's side and a trial from God's side, and temptation in itself is very dangerous. For that reason our Lord teaches us to pray, Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the Evil One. He prayed for Peter before the temptation came, for He foresaw all the danger in which he would be placed. So we will pray for you in that way.

And take heed to this, never go into temptation while you pray Lead us not into temptation, for the man who prays that prayer and then goes into it is a liar before God. If you would have pure intentions, you must walk in the way of purity. Sex and living together belong only within marriage, and a new heart has imparted to it a purity which preserves a man in the midst of temptation. Flee every occasion and place and habit that would draw you toward sin, and choose the path of godly fear and godly company. At any moment temptation may get the mastery over us, storms may drive us, whirlpools may suck us down, and if none of these accomplish our shipwreck we may founder of ourselves. Pray that ye enter not into temptation.

If there has been failure, know that the Holy Spirit can create in you a clean heart and renew a right spirit within you, and give you back more than your former purity. Peter fell and was restored by a look from the Lord and was afterwards made to strengthen his brethren. There is full restoration and fresh joy for those who return to Christ with confession and faith, for salvation is through Jesus Christ alone.

Let us pray together. O Lord, look in mercy upon these two souls. Give them faith in Christ alone for salvation, create in them clean hearts, keep them from entering into temptation, deliver them from the Evil One, make their motives pure and their conduct holy, and guide them by Thy providence and Thy Word. If it be Thy will, lead them in Thy time into the covenant of marriage with reverence and chastity, and if not, give them grace to follow Thy will with contentment and holiness. Make them to live godly lives that shall preach better than words. In the name of Jesus, Amen.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

Thank you for reaching out and sharing your heart and your desire to live for Jesus. It is good that you want your intentions to be pure and that you are turning to prayer in a time of difficulty.

I want to pray for you, and also to help you see what Scripture teaches so that your prayers can be shaped by it. The verse you mentioned, Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate, was spoken by Jesus about marriage, which is a lifelong covenant of one man and one woman. Dating relationships, even sincere ones, are not marriage. God has not yet joined a boyfriend and girlfriend together in that covenant sense. So rather than praying that God will keep a dating relationship together at all costs, it is better to pray that God will make both of you holy, give you wisdom, and guide you clearly according to His will, whether that leads toward marriage in the future or not.

Scripture also teaches that sex and living together belong only within marriage, and that God calls all of us to pursue purity out of love for Him. If there has been any compromise in that area, the most loving prayer is not for God to bless the situation as it is, but for Him to give you both grace to repent where needed, to walk in purity, and to honor Him with your bodies and your choices. Salvation and a right relationship with God come through Jesus Christ alone, and He calls us to follow Him wholeheartedly.

You mentioned that the enemy fights you because you live for Jesus and that you are facing temptation and issues in the relationship. God does allow temptations and trials, not to destroy us, but to draw us to Himself and to teach us to persevere in prayer. Even when we do not receive an immediate answer, we are to keep praying and abiding with Him, like children who run to their father for refuge. Scripture promises that no temptation has taken you except what is common to humanity, and that God is faithful. He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear, and with the temptation He will also make the way of escape, so that you can endure it. That way of escape often means turning from what tempts us, seeking holiness, and clinging to Christ.

Here is how I will pray for you both:

Father, I thank You for this young man who wants to live for Jesus. I pray You would draw him and his girlfriend closer to Yourself above all else. Give them both a clear understanding of Your design for marriage and for purity, and give them courage to obey You. Where there is temptation, provide Your way of escape and strengthen them to take it. Teach them to persevere in prayer and to trust Your faithfulness. Lead them into Your will for their future, and help them to seek Your glory more than their own desires. Bring them to deeper faith in Jesus Christ, in whose name alone we are saved, and help them to walk in holiness and wisdom. Amen.

I encourage you to stay rooted in prayer, in the Word, and in fellowship with mature believers who can counsel you face to face. Ask God to show you whether this relationship is leading you both toward a Christ honoring marriage, and be willing to follow His guidance even if it requires difficult choices. God loves you and wants to form you through these trials to reflect His character more fully.
