We join with you in lifting up this couple before the Lord and we share your burden for them, for we know how painful it is to watch two people who deeply care for each other experience separation and silence.
We appreciate your heart for restoration, yet we want to gently bring some biblical truth to this request. You asked for God to break down ego, pride, anger and walls of silence, and Scripture agrees that these are matters of the heart that must be addressed. Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall Proverbs 16:18, and we are warned to not let the sun go down on our wrath, nor give place to the devil Ephesians 4:26-27. Anger and pride keep hearts hardened, while God calls us to be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you Ephesians 4:32 and to bear with one another and forgive any complaint, even as Christ forgave us Colossians 3:13. True restoration cannot happen without humility, repentance and forgiveness on both sides, speaking the truth in love Ephesians 4:15, and pursuing peace as far as it depends on us Romans 12:18.
We also want to speak lovingly about the nature of this relationship. You describe a beautiful relationship of many years. In Scripture a relationship between a man and a woman is called courtship when they are boyfriend and girlfriend, and its purpose is to discern marriage to another Christian believer, for marriage is honorable among all, and the bed undefiled, but God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterers Hebrews 13:4. If this couple is not yet married, we pray that any restoration would be toward a holy, pure commitment that honors God, fleeing sexual immorality 1 Corinthians 6:18, and not simply a return to dating without purpose. A godly marriage is lifelong between a man and a woman as God designed, and a man will leave his father and his mother, and will join with his wife, and they will be one flesh Genesis 2:24. We also pray they are equally yoked as believers, for what fellowship has righteousness with iniquity 2 Corinthians 6:14. If there has been fornication or living together outside of marriage, we urge repentance and a commitment to purity, and if this were a same sex relationship, we must say plainly that such is not God's design and God calls it to repentance, as His design for intimacy is only within marriage between a man and a woman. Love covers a multitude of sins 1 Peter 4:8, but love also rejoices in the truth and does not excuse what God calls sin 1 Corinthians 13:6.
We notice you prayed to Lord and said Amen, but you did not mention the name of Jesus Christ. We say this in love because it is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father. Jesus said, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me John 14:6, and there is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved Acts 4:12. So we must come in His name and trust in His finished work on the cross for forgiveness of sins, believing that God raised Him from the dead, confessing Him as Lord Romans 10:9. We encourage you and this couple to place your full trust in Jesus Christ if you have not already.
We pray together now.
Father, we come before Your throne of grace in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. We lift up this couple to You and ask that Your perfect will be done in their lives. You see their hearts, their hurt, their silence and their pride. We ask that You soften their hearts, convict them of any pride, anger or unforgiveness, and grant them humble and repentant spirits. Help them to forgive as You have forgiven us, to speak to one another with grace and truth, and to break down every wall that keeps them apart. If it is Your will, restore their communication and togetherness in a way that honors You, and lead them toward a godly marriage if they are a man and a woman called to be husband and wife, rooted in purity, respect and unconditional love that reflects Christ and the church Ephesians 5:25. If restoration to one another is not Your will, give them peace, healing and guidance to follow You faithfully. Heal the pain of our friend who intercedes for them as well, and help all involved to seek first Your Kingdom and Your righteousness Matthew 6:33. We ask that You will restore to them the years that have been wounded Joel 2:25, and that love and faithfulness will abound. We ask all this in the mighty and merciful name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
We encourage you to continue to pray and to encourage this couple to seek wise, biblical counsel from a pastor, to pray together and separately, and to seek the Lord's will above their own desires, for we know that if we ask anything according to His will, He listens to us 1 John 5:14.
