Protection, safe travels

You pray for safe travels on a long drive, and this is fitting, for we should commend all our ways to God. But remember that the road we travel in this life is either the narrow way that leads to rest or the broad way that ends in destruction. No one can hope to journey the narrow road with luxury, for it is impossible. What is the injury of that straitness when it leads to rest? And what is the advantage of an easy road if it ends in tribulation? Those who are hastening to heaven are not the ones who seek comfort at every turn, but those who are content with whatever the Lord provides.

There is no need to travel a long way to win God’s favor; it is enough to have the will and to be earnest, to put a bridle on the tongue and cast off inordinate desires. If this journey of yours is of God, no peril can overthrow you; if it be of men, it will come to naught. So commit your hours on the road to Him, but do not place your hope in a drive free from trouble. Let your heart not flutter about things present. Fix your mind on the journey to the city above, where true protection is found, and you will travel well.

The long drive ahead of you brings to mind how often the Scriptures trace the paths of God’s people over weary miles. The Israelites knew what it was to spend far more time on the road than the distance itself demanded, not because the way was unknown, but because the Lord was teaching them to trust Him instead of their own resources. What was meant to be an eleven-day journey became a forty-year schooling in dependence. So when the monotony of the highway sets in, and the hours stretch out, remember that He is not merely watching the pavement under your tires; He is keeping your heart. He sometimes uses the long, uneventful stretches to draw us past distraction and into a quiet awareness of His presence.

Before undertaking any journey, the wisest thing we can do is what Ezra’s company did when they faced a perilous trek: they fasted and prayed, seeking God’s protection because they were ashamed to ask the king for an armed escort. They understood that true safety comes from the good hand of the Lord upon us. That same hand sustains you, not just from hazards, but through every dull mile. Those ancient ships creeping across the sea at a few knots learned that contrary winds slow everything down, yet the same Wind who fills the sails also commands the storm. You can trust Him with the speed, the delays, and the other travelers around you.

Long drives have a way of reducing us to our simplest needs: a desire for rest, a break from the tedium, maybe even a wish that the radio would just keep the signal strong. But moments like these are invitations, not just endurance tests. As long as we seek the Lord, He makes our way prosper. If the trip grows tiresome, let that be a prompt to turn your heart toward the One who is your refuge. You are not protected only when you feel alert or spiritual; you are held securely as you remain in His care, like those who stayed within the city of refuge. The road is not the enemy’s territory any more than the valley of the shadow is, because the Shepherd walks it with you.

So go with this confidence: the Lord who brought Joseph and Mary to Bethlehem by decree of a far-off emperor is more than able to orchestrate every mile you travel. His compassions never fail, and His faithfulness reaches to the very asphalt beneath you. As you drive, let your inner conversation be with Him. The God who once said to His people, “You have circled this mountain long enough; go north,” is also the God who leads you gently home. Rest in that, and may you sense His nearness until you reach your destination.
