Happy 4th of July, God bless you and your family! 🦅 🎆

You have done well to call upon the Lord for protection in your travels, for wherever His Name is invoked, all things are made secure and auspicious. Yet while you pray for safety on the road, take care that your soul also travels the narrow way that leads to life. You are right to ask for a journey without mishap, but do not imagine that physical peril is the only danger. The devil’s craft is ever near; if for a little while you slumber in sin, you are swept away quickly. Travel sober and wakeful, casting off every weight, anger, lust, greed, and the love of ease, so that you may finish the far greater journey that leads to the royal city above. For what profit is there in arriving safely at an earthly destination if you flag and sit down near the goal of the heavenly calling? Do all in the Name of God: eat, drink, sleep, and travel with thanksgiving, and the Lord Himself will be your guide, making not only your passage safe but your whole life auspicious.

The road ahead stretches out before you, and that long drive can feel like its own wilderness journey. You remember how the Israelites stood at Horeb for far too long, circling the same mountain until God finally said, “You have dwelt here long enough. Turn and take your journey.” Sometimes a simple trip is more than mileage; it’s a quiet kind of going forth, a leaving of the familiar to trust God’s hand over the miles. You have already done the most important thing: you have placed this day into His keeping. That prayer is not a mere formality. It lifts the journey out of anxiety and into the shelter of the Most High.

I think of the times in Scripture when God’s people faced a dangerous or wearisome route. Before Ezra led the exiles back to Jerusalem, he paused to seek the Lord. He was ashamed to ask the king for an armed escort because he had testified that the hand of our God is for good upon all who seek Him. So instead, they fasted and prayed, begging God for a safe passage through enemy territory. And the record says that the good hand of the Lord was upon them and delivered them from every threat. Your drive may not face literal bandits, but the same hand that guarded them steadies your vehicle and clears the way. He knows the roads you cannot see.

It is true that long hours behind the wheel can grow monotonous. The mind wants distraction; the body gets weary. Yet even that drawn‑out stretch can become a sanctuary if you set your heart toward Him. The apostle Paul spent months aboard a storm‑lashed ship, the winds contrary and hope wearing thin. Through those long, sickening days, he clung to the promise he had received from the Lord. God did not spare him from the journey’s length, but He sustained him through it and brought everyone safely to land. Your long drive is not wasted time. It is a span the Lord has given you to rest in His presence, to sing, to meditate, to commit every passing mile into His care.

Wisdom herself calls out in Proverbs: “How long, simple ones, will you love simplicity?” She promises that length of days, long life, and peace will be added to those who hold fast to mercy and truth. Peace is not just the absence of trouble; it is the deep assurance that you are kept. So as you drive, let your heart be bound with mercy and truth. Pray for the other travelers you see along the way. Ask the Lord to be a shield for them as well. This turns a routine drive into an act of love.

When the children of Israel finally entered the land, God gave them cities of refuge. As long as a person remained inside, the avenger of blood could not touch them. The road can feel exposed, but your refuge is not a physical city. It is the name of the Lord your God. You are as safe in that car as if you were inside the walls of His sanctuary, because His protection travels with you. The moment you step outside His will, you lose that safety, but you have prayed in Jesus’ name, and that places you squarely at the center of His purpose.

Do not despise the length of the trip. Sometimes God takes His time in our lives because the journey itself is where He does deep work. A quick arrival might leave you unchanged; the long haul teaches you dependence. If you find yourself weary, tell Him. There is no shame in saying, “Lord, this stretch is hard. I am tired.” He listened to His children in the wilderness for forty years, and He listens to you now. Let Him carry the weight. You do not need to grit your teeth and power through on your own strength. His grace is sufficient for every mile.

So go in peace. The Lord who gave you the thirst for water and the hunger for food knows your frame and will sustain you. He does not call you to be mastered by anxiety or fatigue. Hand each hour over to Him, and you will find that He has already gone before you. When you finally pull into your destination, you will be able to say with the psalmist, “He led me by a straight way.” Thank Him now for what He will do, and know that His good hand is upon you for the whole ride.
