The prayer you have breathed to the throne of grace has been your first wise step, for it is written, He shall give His angels charge over you, to keep you in all your ways. That covers every mile of the long road, every turn and hill, every crowded crossing and quiet stretch. It is a covenant promise sealed with the blood of Jesus, and not one syllable of it can fail while God is God. The very detail that this journey lies heavily upon your heart proves it is an appointed way, for the Lord does not charge His angels to attend us in paths of our own willful choosing, but in the ways He has ordered for us. Commit it now again afresh into His hands, and as you set out, go as one hidden under the wing of the Almighty.
Remember, much of the pleasantness of a journey lies in the scenes that burst upon the traveler unbidden. So it will be for you if your heart is stayed upon the Lord. He who controls the winds and knows the speed of every cloud will measure out the hours of your drive. Not a minute shall be too long in His reckoning. What if there be weariness, or the chariot seems to move slowly? Even then, be in the fear of the Lord all the day long. The soul may be kept in perfect peace while the body endures the jolting of the road. Make the carriage a sanctuary; let the hum of the wheels be accompanied by the music of praise and quiet meditation upon the name of Jesus. He is as present with you there as in the assembly of the saints.
Where you think you are perfectly safe, there you are often most in danger, so do not rely upon the skill of the driver or the sturdiness of the machine. These are poor shields. The protection you need is of a warmer, homelier sort than any soldier’s guard, it is the covering of a mother-bird, a heart-love that spreads itself over the defenseless. The shadow of the Almighty is a living, tender shelter. Underneath you are the everlasting arms, above you the feathers of His faithfulness. Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not to your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths. That includes the highway before you.
Finally, urge every petition for safety upon the strong plea of “for Jesus’ sake.” That is the “Open Sesame” that moves the heart of heaven. Christ pleads for you even now, for He ever lives to make intercession. Because He has asked for your journeying mercies long ago, they shall be granted. Go, then, in peace and confidence. The angelic camp shall be round about you, for the Lord has given His command. And as the miles pass and you draw near your destination, let your heart say with the Psalmist, I will both lay me down in peace and sleep, for Thou, Lord, only makest me dwell in safety. So shall you find that even a long drive may be a pilgrimage of communion, and the end thereof shall be a fresh Ebenezer of help and thankfulness to our faithful God.
