Core Meaning
• Averting Wrath: It refers to the act of removing or absorbing divine judgment that humanity deserves for moral evil.
• Not a Human Bribe: Unlike pagan ideas where people try to calm an angry god, God Himself lovingly provides the sacrifice.
• Justice and Love Meeting: It satisfies God’s holy justice while showing His mercy, allowing sinners to be forgiven.

Key Biblical Passages
• Romans 3:25: God presented Jesus as a propitiation (or sacrifice of atonement) through His blood, received by faith.
• 1 John 2:2: Jesus is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only, but for the sins of the whole world.
• 1 John 4:10: Love is shown not because we loved God, but because He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

Difference from Expiation
• Expiation: The removal or canceling of sin and guilt.
• Propitiation: Specifically the turning away of the personal wrath of God directed at that sin through the full payment of the penalty.

Psalm 55:2 :
hear me and answer me. My thoughts trouble me and I am distraught

Prayer Inspired by Psalm 55:2
Our prayer:
"Heavenly Father, we come to You right now because we are overwhelmed and troubled by what is happening around us. Please listen to our voice and answer us in our distress. We bring our restless thoughts, our pain, and our heavy sighs into Your presence.

When we do not know what to do, we look to You for comfort, strength, and rescue. In Jesus' name, Amen."

We thank you for sharing this thoughtful study on propitiation and for bringing Psalm 55:2 before us, and we join with you in reflecting on these precious truths together.

We agree that your understanding of propitiation is biblical and important. It is not merely the removal of guilt, which is expiation, but the satisfying of God's righteous wrath against sin itself through a perfect sacrifice. Scripture is clear that all have sinned and that the wrath of God is revealed against ungodliness, yet God in His love provided what His justice required. As it is written, God is love but He is also holy and just, and at the cross both His justice and His mercy meet perfectly.

We rejoice that unlike pagan ideas where sinful people try to bribe or appease an angry deity, our God Himself lovingly provided the sacrifice. Romans 3:25 says whom God sent to be an atoning sacrifice, through faith in his blood, for the demonstration of his righteousness through the passing over of prior sins, in God's forbearance. And 1 John 2:2 says And he is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not for ours only, but also for the whole world. Again 1 John 4:10 says In this is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. We also remember Romans 5:9 which says Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we will be saved from God's wrath through him.

This is the heart of the gospel, that Jesus Christ fully bore the penalty we deserved, turning away the personal wrath of God directed at our sin, so that through faith in Him we can be forgiven, reconciled, and have peace with God. It is only through the name of Jesus that we have access to the Father and it is only by His blood that propitiation is made, for Acts 4:12 says There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved.

We also hear your heart in Psalm 55:2 which says Attend to me, and answer me. I am restless in my complaint and moan. We know what it is to feel troubled and distraught in our thoughts, restless and overwhelmed by what is happening around us, and we take comfort that God invites us to bring our heavy sighs and restless complaints honestly into His presence. He does not turn away from a troubled heart but hears and answers.

We pray together with you now.

Heavenly Father, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ Your Son, our propitiation and our peace. We thank You that You did not leave us under Your righteous wrath but You sent Jesus to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins through His blood, received by faith. We thank You that Your justice has been satisfied and Your love has been poured out, so that we who believe are justified and saved from wrath through Him. Lord, we also bring our restless thoughts and troubled hearts before You just as the psalmist did. Attend to us and answer us when we are distraught and overwhelmed. Calm our minds, comfort our hearts, and strengthen us to trust in Your mercy and Your rescue. Help us to rest in the finished work of Christ and to walk in the assurance that we are forgiven and heard. Teach us to live in a way that honors the great price paid for us. In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

We encourage you to continue to meditate on these passages and to rest in the assurance that because Jesus has borne the wrath for us, we can now approach God with confidence and cast all our anxieties on Him, for He cares for us.

We hear how heavy your thoughts have been and how distraught you feel, and we are thankful you put that into words with us. Feeling troubled and restless inside is exhausting, and you do not have to carry it alone.

What you wrote about propitiation is a steady comfort when anxiety rises. It is not about us trying to calm an angry God or earn our way back to Him. He Himself in love provided the way through Jesus to deal with our sin and satisfy His justice, so we can come to Him honestly, even with a troubled mind. That means when your thoughts feel loud, you can bring them just as they are to a Father who already knows you and hears you.

When the restlessness comes, it can help to have one simple, steady place to turn. Many find it grounding to pause and tell God plainly what is troubling them in that moment, and to let one trusted person know as well, a pastor, counselor, or mature friend who can pray with you and walk with you. If those troubled thoughts and physical tension persist or make daily life hard, we encourage you to reach out to a trusted medical or counseling professional alongside prayer, so you have support for both heart and body.

Father, we lift our friend to You right now in the middle of these restless thoughts. Please draw near, quiet what is overwhelming, and remind them that You hear and answer. Give peace for today, wisdom for next steps, and the comfort of knowing they are held by You. In Jesus' name, Amen.

It is a blessed and true thing you have written concerning propitiation, that the wrath of God which we deserved has been turned away not by any bribe of our own, but by God Himself providing the sacrifice. There upon the cross, justice and love met together. The holy justice of God was satisfied through the blood of His Son, and His mercy was displayed, so that sinners who believe might be forgiven. As it is written, God presented Him as a sacrifice of atonement through faith in His blood, and He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only.

This is the comfort for a troubled mind. You speak also of restless thoughts and a distraught heart, and you pray with the Psalmist, hear me and answer me, my thoughts trouble me and I am distraught. Such a prayer is right and welcome before the Lord. He hears the sighing and the crying of His people, and He does not despise a troubled prayer.

Know this, that God's thoughts toward you in Christ are not thoughts of wrath, but thoughts of peace. There was One upon whom God's wrath did press very sorely, even Jesus Christ, who bore all God's waves and billows in our stead, that we might know His favor. For those who are in Christ, there remains no righteous anger, but fatherly love. His thoughts concerning you are precious and very great, more in number than the sand upon the seashore, and they are everlasting, tender, wise and practical, for with Him to will is to do. He thinks of you constantly and kindly, and His thoughts are of peace and not of evil, to give you an expected end.

When the multitude of thoughts within you trouble you, remember that the more a believer thinks of his God, the more comfort he will have. Your thoughts may be full of foreboding and fear, but His thoughts are far above yours, as the heavens are high above the earth. Sin is the fault of the creature, but mercy is the attribute of the Creator, and that mercy swallows up the fault for all who look to Christ by faith.

Therefore I would have you bring not only your sorrows before Him, but your sins also, confessing them and looking again to the propitiation made by blood. And seek your comfort where God has appointed it, in His Word, which is His thoughts spoken, and in the assembly of His people, where He often speaks with a still small voice to the heavy heart.

Let us pray together for you.

Heavenly Father, we come before Your holy presence through the blood of Jesus Christ, our propitiation, who has borne Your righteous wrath that we might receive Your peace. Hear this troubled heart and answer according to Your tender mercy. You know the restless thoughts that disquiet the soul. Speak comfort to the distressed and grant strength to the weary. Help this one to rest not upon feelings but upon the finished work of Christ, and to know that Your thoughts toward Your children are thoughts of peace. Restore the sense of Your presence, quiet the multitude of anxious thoughts with Your sacred comforts, and keep this soul leaning upon Your all sufficient grace until faith is turned to sight. In the name of Jesus our only hope, Amen.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

Your troubled thoughts and your prayer have been heard, and we have brought them before the Lord with you.

You have spoken rightly concerning propitiation. It is not that we persuaded an unwilling God to love us, but that God Himself in His love provided the sacrifice that His own holy justice required. As it is written, God presented Jesus as a sacrifice of atonement through His blood, to be received by faith, Romans 3:25, and He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world, 1 John 2:2. This is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as the sacrifice that turns away His wrath from our sin, 1 John 4:10. In this one act justice and mercy meet. Our guilt is removed and His righteous wrath is satisfied, so that sinners who trust in Christ are forgiven and brought near to God through Jesus alone.

And with that truth we bring your distress from Psalm 55 to Him who is the Father of mercies and God of all comfort. You prayed, hear me and answer me, my thoughts trouble me and I am distraught, and that is a prayer God does not despise. He knows what you suffer and He has power to help, and nothing that touches you escapes His knowledge and care. Even as affliction abounds, so comfort also abounds through Christ, and He comforts us in all our affliction so that we may know His presence and His strength.

We have prayed for you in this way. Heavenly Father, we thank You for providing Your Son to bear the penalty for sin and to turn away Your just wrath, so that all who believe in Him have peace with You. We ask You to hear this troubled heart that cries out to You now. You know every restless thought and heavy sigh. Grant comfort, steady faith, and the assurance that You are near. Strengthen this soul to rest not on feeling but on the finished work of Christ, and to walk in a clear conscience before You. Give wisdom for what to do next, peace in the waiting, and hope in the promise that You will never leave those who trust in Your Son. In the name of Jesus Christ our Lord we pray, Amen.

Be encouraged and do not be troubled as if something strange were happening. Cast your cares upon Him, remain in His Word, and keep looking to Christ who is our comfort and our crown.
