Productivity

Thank you for sharing this honest request about productivity. It is good to bring even this practical area before the Lord, because Scripture shows that God is not only interested in how much we get done, but in why we do it and how we do it.

One of the most important things to examine is the motivation of the heart. The Bible teaches that every way may seem right in our own eyes, but the Lord weighs the heart, and one day He will test our motives. It is possible to do many things and even to do them in His name, yet miss Him if the heart was seeking our own recognition or glory. Proverbs says to keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it flow the issues of life. So as you pray about productivity, ask the Lord to show you what is driving you. Is it love for Christ and a desire to steward well what He has entrusted to you, or is it pressure to prove yourself, to gain approval, or to keep up with others. The love of Christ is the only lasting and true motive for service. When that love constrains us, our work becomes an offering to Him rather than an effort to exalt ourselves.

Productivity in the Christian life is also linked to diligence and discipline. Scripture compares the believer to an athlete in a race. Athletes willingly deny themselves, train their bodies, and keep a strict discipline for a crown that will not last. How much more should we be willing to live with discipline for an incorruptible crown that the Lord promises to His faithful people. Paul spoke of keeping his body under control and bringing it into subjection, lest after helping others he himself should be disqualified. That picture is of a three part person, body, mind and spirit, where the spirit leads and the body is not allowed to rule. Growing in productivity often means practicing that kind of self discipline in small, consistent spiritual and practical habits, saying no to what distracts and yes to what matters.

Peter urges us to give all diligence to add to our faith. Our life with God begins with faith, but we are to diligently add virtue, knowledge, self control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly kindness and love. Giving diligence to grow in these things keeps us from being unfruitful and helps make our calling and election sure. In the same way, diligence in daily work is not about frantic activity, but about faithfully adding what is needed step by step, trusting that God is forming Christ in us as we are faithful.

Jesus also warned not to labor only for what perishes, but for what endures to everlasting life. Much of what the world calls productivity is measured by material gain or visible achievement. God invites us to a higher measure, to be productive for eternity, doing work that has lasting value in His kingdom.

It helps too to keep your focus on the Lord Himself more than on the list of tasks. When the early believers faced great pressure, they began their prayer by worshiping God for who He is, His greatness and faithfulness, and then they brought their need. When we focus on our problems, faith shrinks and the burden grows. When we focus on God, faith grows and the problems come into proper perspective. Jesus taught His disciples to begin prayer with attention to the Father, His name and His kingdom, before presenting personal requests. Let your prayers about productivity start with worship and trust, then bring your practical needs.

Even our prayers need to be checked for motive. James says we sometimes ask and do not receive because we ask with a wrong motive, to spend it on our own desires. So it is right to examine ourselves and ask God to purify our asking, that our desire to be more productive would be to serve Him better, love others more faithfully, and use our time as a good steward.

I am praying for you that God will give you a clear heart, a disciplined life, and strength to run your race to win. May He show you any motive that needs to be surrendered, teach you to keep your body and habits under the leadership of the Spirit, help you to diligently grow in faith and character, and keep your eyes fixed on Him rather than on pressure or comparison. May your work, whether great or small, be done out of love for Jesus and for His glory, and may He make you fruitful in what truly lasts.

Father, I lift this dear one to You. You see the desire to use time well and to be faithful in daily responsibilities. Search the heart and reveal what motivates this desire. Fill it with Your love so that all labor is for You. Grant wisdom to set priorities, discipline to follow through, and grace to rest in Your strength and not in mere self effort. Teach a focus on who You are, so faith is strengthened and work is done in peace. Make this life productive in the things that endure, and let everything be done for Your honor through Jesus Christ, amen.
