Chrysostom
Beloved of All
You ask for protection and healing, and rightly so, for Satan the deceiver prowls about, and the sorrows of this world press heavy. But hear this: the peace you seek is not the peace of slumbering in sin, nor the truce that robbers make among themselves. Our Lord Himself declared, "I came not to send peace, but a sword." What then? Does He deny us peace? By no means! But He cuts away the diseased flesh, He separates the mutinous part, that the whole might be saved. That is the peace which passes all understanding, the peace which makes you a son of God. For the peacemakers are called sons of God, because they wage war against evil within and without, and so bring the soul into harmony with Heaven.
You pray for rest. There remains a rest for the people of God, but do not think it is idleness or escape from every trial. It is the rest of a quieted soul, anchored in Christ, having ceased from its own works as God did from His. But see that you do not fall by the same example of unbelief. Many who beheld the wonders of old did not enter that rest because they hardened their hearts. So labor to enter that rest, by holding fast your confession, by running from the table of devils and every spectacle of Satan, for you renounced these when you were initiated into the holy mysteries. What fellowship has light with darkness? If you have come to the mercy-seat of Christ, do not return to the mire where harlots and effeminates make a pageant of shame. Such things stir up the wrath of God and give foothold to the enemy.
You desire healing for your family. Then pursue peace with all, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord. But know this: sometimes peace in a household is a wicked conspiracy, like Naboth’s false accusers agreeing together. If your household walks contrary to Christ, the truce you seek may be enmity with God. In such a case, the sword of division is a mercy, setting the faithful free from the contagion of sin. Pray for them without ceasing, but stand firm in righteousness, that they may see your good works and glorify God. The God of love and peace will be with you if you are of one mind with His truth and live according to it. Then He will bruise Satan under your feet shortly, for He delights not in turmoil but in holy concord.
Therefore, do not merely beg for freedom and rest as the world gives. Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added. Rejoice, be perfected, be comforted, be of the same mind with the body of Christ, live in peace, and the God of love and peace shall be with you. He is the healer of souls, the giver of true rest. To Him lift up your hands in purity, asking for the Angel of peace to attend you, and He will give you a peace that makes all other things useful. But if you harbor any secret sin, cast it out, for nothing hinders prayer like a double heart. The mercy-seat now speaks of heavenly things, not of earthly wars and fleeting comforts. So you, having come to it, set your hope yonder, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God, and you will find rest for your soul.
