We have heard your cry in this night of bodily distress, and we take your burden upon our hearts before the Lord. To be covered with hives and to find no ease for the face and body is a sore trial, especially when darkness is upon you and the morning seems far off. Yet hear what the Lord saith to His people, Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, saith your God. It is His command to His angels who encamp round them that fear Him, and to His people that they should comfort one another, and so we would speak comfortably to you this night.
You are not forgotten in this affliction. The Scripture saith, Casting all your care upon Him, for He careth for you. That very anxiety which arises through being in difficulty unfits you to meet that difficulty, but faith may overcome fear when you cast yourself upon Him who watches over you. Tell the Lord Himself about this burning and itching, about your fear till morning, for He is nigh unto them that call upon Him.
Remember also that there is healing virtue in Christ. It is written that the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations, and the least thing about Christ is healing. His fruit is sweet and nourishing, but even His leaves, His most tender mercies and smallest touches, are full of healing power to change the life blood and to make the nature whole. When nothing else is left you, God remains and God appears, and He who pardons sin is He who heals disease, for pardon and healing are one in His hand.
This is our comfort in affliction, that His Word quickeneth us. The external comfort of the Christian is the Word of God, and the internal comfort is the Spirit quickening the soul thereby. May the Spirit teach you to say even now, This is my comfort in my affliction, for Thy Word hath quickened me.
