Silas
Beloved of All
Your pain and exhaustion come through so clearly, and your love for both your mother and your brother is evident. To live day after day hearing loud yelling, offensive words, and anger in your own home is draining and heartbreaking, especially when neighbors are complaining, help has been refused, and your mother says she wants to live with you but does not follow through. It is understandable that you feel tired and worn down from witnessing this.
I am praying for you, for your mother, and for your brother in the name of Jesus Christ, the only one through whom we have salvation and access to God. Scripture shows that our inner life and our outer health are deeply connected. One proverb says a joyful heart is good like medicine, and one of the apostles prayed that believers would prosper and be in good health even as their souls prosper. Attitudes and the condition of the soul can affect the body, and the body can affect the mind. That is why we should keep praying for healing of the whole person, inner and outer, while also continuing to seek competent medical and counseling help. Severe mental distress that leads to constant anger and shouting is not simply a spiritual matter to be prayed away in a moment, it often needs ongoing care from doctors and counselors. Even when help has been refused before, it is right to keep those doors open, to keep good records, and to ask trusted family and mature believers to stand with you in seeking help.
I am also praying that God will strengthen each of you in your inner being by His Spirit. The Scripture teaches that Jesus has been raised far above every principality and power and every name that is named, both in this world and in the world to come. There is no curse or threat or claim of black magic that is greater than Him. Those who are in Christ are part of one family, the family of God, named after the Father, members together of one body. His love has breadth and length and depth and height, and it endures. You do not need to live in fear of what others have threatened. Bring that fear to Jesus, ask Him to guard your family, and rest in the truth that He alone has authority over all spiritual powers.
God designed the family to be a secure and loving place where each person is cared for, and when yelling and verbal abuse take over a home that design is broken. It is painful to be spoken to with such harshness, and Jesus Himself knows what it is to receive verbal abuse and rejection, even from those close to Him. He sees what you and your mother are enduring. Scripture also teaches that we have a real responsibility to care for our own family, and that includes older parents. That responsibility is holy, but it does not mean that one person must endure ongoing abuse without boundaries or that you must carry this alone. Your mother may feel torn between love for your brother and desire for peace, and promises made out of distress are often hard to keep. Continue to show her love, keep your invitation to live with you open and practical when it is safe and possible, and let other wise and calm people in your family and in the family of God help you bear this burden and help her make safe choices.
If at any time there is danger or threats of harm, please seek immediate help from local authorities and emergency services, even if past calls have not brought change. Keep a safety plan for yourself and your mother, talk with a pastor and a medical professional you trust about next steps, and do not stay alone in a volatile situation. It is also important for you to care for your own soul and body. Constant stress affects health. Find time for rest, for prayer, for Scripture, and for fellowship with believers who can support you, listen, and pray with you regularly. The Lord wants to renew your inner strength so you can continue to love well without being consumed.
Let us pray together. Father, in the name of Jesus Christ I lift this family to You. Have mercy on this brother who is so angry and tormented, calm his mind, bring healing to his body and soul, and lead him to receive the help he needs. Protect this mother, give her clarity and courage to choose what is safe and good, and comfort her heart. Strengthen this loved one who is weary from watching and listening to so much conflict, renew them in their inner being by Your Spirit, guard them from fear, and surround them with Your love that is wide and long and deep and high. Provide wise helpers, doctors, counselors, and faithful believers to come alongside them, and make a way for peace in this home. We ask this trusting that Jesus is Lord over all and that You hear us when we call on Him. Amen.
