Your heart for your mother is clear in this request, and the heaviness you and your family are carrying is very real. To watch a mother you love be controlled, to see her health needs for blood pressure medicine and for cataract surgery put at risk, and to feel helpless after trying so many avenues for help, brings deep sorrow. Thank you for bringing this before the Lord and for asking others to pray.
Scripture gives us a beautiful picture for how we are to regard older women, to treat them as mothers, with gentleness, honor and respect, not with harshness. That is the spirit you are showing in wanting to provide a safe and peaceful home where she can receive her medication, have the surgery she needs, and enjoy the simple good gifts of life again. The Bible also teaches that we have a responsibility to care for our own family, to do what we can to provide for their needs, and that this care is a basic expression of our faith. Your desire to see her cared for in this way is right and pleasing to God.
At the same time your request shows the painful complexity when love for a parent is entangled with a son who is unwell and controlling. We see something of this in David and his son Absalom. Absalom was in open rebellion against his father, even seeking his life, and yet David's heart remained tender toward him. He said deal gently with the young man. That does not excuse the wrong, but it shows how a parent's love can remain even when a child's behavior is destructive and wayward. It helps us understand why your mother may refuse to leave even when others try to help her pack and find safety. That bond is strong, and it can keep a person in a place of great vulnerability. We can love the one who is ill and still recognize that controlling behavior, especially over another person's money, medicine and medical care, is not right and must not be enabled.
Another lesson we can hold onto is that the Lord Himself is to rule over us. When others press to take control, we can remember that ultimate authority and protection belong to Him. He sees affliction, He hears when we cry out, and He is able to make a way even when people and systems seem unable to help. He is the one who can guard and hide and deliver, and He is the one who can work in your brother's heart to bring help for his illness and restraint from controlling others.
I am praying with you for your mother, for the appointment on Monday, for the cataract surgery that has been cancelled before, and for her need for blood pressure medication. I am asking the Lord to grant her protection, clear access to her own resources and medical care, and freedom from being controlled or prevented from receiving treatment. I am praying for wisdom for you, your cousins and all who are trying to help, that you may speak and act with respectful firmness, with patience and with love that does not shame your mother but honors her as a mother while also seeking her safety. I am praying for your brother, that God would bring the right medical and professional help to him, bring stability to his mind and behavior, and break the pattern of control. And I am praying for you as you open your home and heart to your mother, that the Lord would give you strength, grace and provision to care for her well.
Please continue to work with the medical professionals and the proper authorities for her care, keep a careful record of her medical needs and any interference with them, and continue to offer your mother a safe alternative without forcing her. Keep showing her steady love and keep pointing her to Jesus Christ, through whom alone we have salvation and hope, and who invites all who are weary and burdened to come to Him for rest.
May the Lord grant your mother healing, peace and the ability to receive the care she needs, and may He give your whole family wisdom, unity and comfort in the days ahead.
