Prayers to get out of a toxic situation

Disciple of Prayer
I pray in the name of Jesus Christ that I will find a way out of this. I’ve been trying so hard, when I think things are okay, then all of a sudden it starts again. Someone I’ve been around has been verbally abusive towards me. I honestly can’t do it anymore. I know I have God by my side, but I feel lost sometimes. I need the courage to find a way out. I thought this was someone I could trust, someone I could rely on. And then when it comes to trusting them, or asking them for help, it becomes coercive control. Blaming me for their mistakes and misfortune. And it isn’t fair.

We hear your cry for help and stand with you in prayer, lifting your situation before the Lord with heavy hearts. Verbal abuse and coercive control are not part of God’s design for relationships, He calls us to love one another with kindness, patience, and respect (Ephesians 4:29-32). The cycle you describe, where moments of peace are shattered by renewed hurt, is a tactic of the enemy to wear you down, but we declare that God’s strength is made perfect in your weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9). You are not lost; you are seen, known, and deeply loved by the One who promises to be a refuge for the oppressed (Psalm 9:9).

The Bible is clear that we are to guard our hearts and surround ourselves with those who build us up in Christ, not tear us down (Proverbs 4:23, 1 Corinthians 15:33). This person’s refusal to take responsibility for their actions and their pattern of shifting blame onto you is a violation of God’s command to bear one another’s burdens in humility (Galatians 6:2). You were not created to endure manipulation or abuse, your worth is found in Christ alone, and no one has the right to diminish that.

We rebuke the spirit of fear that may be whispering you have no way out. The Lord has not given you a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7). Trusting someone who has proven untrustworthy is not a failure on your part; it is a painful lesson that God can use to redirect your steps. The enemy may have intended this for harm, but God can turn it around for your good (Genesis 50:20). You are not alone in this, we stand with you, and more importantly, the Holy Spirit is your Comforter and Guide (John 14:26).

Let us pray together:

Heavenly Father, we come before You on behalf of our sister/brother, lifting up this toxic situation that has left them feeling trapped and weary. Lord, You see every tear, every moment of confusion, and every instance where their trust has been broken. We ask that You would be their shield and their deliverer (Psalm 18:2). Give them supernatural courage to take the steps needed to remove themselves from this harmful environment. Soften the hearts of those who could offer practical help, a safe place to stay, wise counsel, or simply a listening ear. Provide divine opportunities for escape, and let Your peace guard their heart and mind in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:7).

Father, we rebuke the lies of the enemy that tell them they are powerless or that they deserve this treatment. Remind them daily of their identity in You: chosen, beloved, and fearfully and wonderfully made (1 Peter 2:9, Psalm 139:14). Heal the wounds left by these words and actions, and replace bitterness with Your perfect peace. Surround them with godly community, people who will speak truth, pray with them, and walk alongside them as they rebuild.

Lord, we ask for wisdom to discern the safest path forward. If there are legal or financial barriers to leaving, we pray You would make a way where there seems to be no way (Isaiah 43:19). Protect their mind from despair and their heart from hardening. Let them experience Your presence in tangible ways, a Scripture that speaks directly to their situation, a song that lifts their spirit, or an unexpected kindness that reminds them they are not forgotten.

Above all, Father, we pray they would draw closer to You through this trial. Let this season refine their faith, not destroy it. May they find their strength in You alone, knowing that even when they are weak, You are strong (2 Corinthians 12:10). We declare that this is not the end of their story, You are writing a testimony of deliverance, and we will rejoice when they are free.

In the mighty name of Jesus, we pray, believing that You are already at work. Amen.

Friend, you are not defined by this person’s treatment of you. God’s Word says, “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit” (Psalm 34:18). You are not a victim; you are an overcomer in Christ (1 John 5:4). The fact that you are reaching out for prayer is evidence of the Holy Spirit’s work in your life, He would not stir your heart to seek freedom if He did not intend to provide it.

Consider confiding in a pastor, trusted friend, or Christian counselor who can help you create a safety plan. Organizations that assist those in abusive situations can also provide resources. You may feel alone, but God has placed people in your life who can help, ask Him to reveal them to you. And remember, every small step toward freedom is a victory. Whether it’s saving money in secret, researching safe housing, or simply praying for wisdom each day, God honors your obedience.

The road ahead may feel daunting, but Jesus has already walked through the valley of the shadow of death ahead of you (Psalm 23:4). He knows the way, and He will not leave you to navigate it alone. Keep crying out to Him, and let His Word be your anchor. “The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears them; He delivers them from all their troubles” (Psalm 34:17). Your deliverance is coming.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Psalm 37:4: Delight yourself in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.
Matthew 6:33: But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.
