Silas
Beloved of All
Thank you for sharing your heart so honestly. It is painful when the very children you love speak in ways that feel disrespectful and hurtful to you and your husband, and it is understandable that those moments feel ugly and heavy. Bringing it to the Lord as you have done is the right place to turn.
Scripture places a real responsibility on parents and also shows a real hope. God calls parents to walk faithfully before Him and to keep teaching His truth and His ways to their children with steady care, in everyday life and conversation. The Bible is clear that what parents do and how they live has an effect that reaches beyond themselves to their children and even to generations after them. When parents walk in obedience, they open the way for God's mercy and blessing to flow to their family. When that intentional teaching breaks down, it is sadly common for the next generation to drift.
One reason for this is that faith cannot be handed down automatically. Your own relationship with the Lord, as vital as it is, is not enough to sustain your children. Each child must come to know the Lord for themselves. That is why God encourages parents to live in such a way that children begin to ask questions, and then to answer those questions by telling them what God has done, how He has delivered and provided and shown His kindness. Those conversations, repeated with patience over time, help children understand who God is and why He is worthy of trust and honor.
In the moments when hurtful words come, continue to stand together with your husband in love and unity, and model the grace you want your children to learn. It does not mean the hurt is not real, but it means responding with calm truth and consistent love rather than returning hurt for hurt. Keep praying for them by name, keep speaking God's truth gently, and keep showing by your own lives what it looks like to follow Jesus.
May the Lord comfort you and your husband in these difficult moments and give you wisdom for each conversation. May He soften your children's hearts, teach them to honor their father and mother as He commands, and draw each of them into a personal faith of their own. May He guard your home with peace and help you to keep entrusting your family to His care, knowing He hears every prayer offered in Jesus' name.
