Prayer

We hear your question and we understand you are asking whether faithfully praying for your mother each day will change your own heart, and we believe the answer is yes, for God uses prayer not only to bless those we pray for but to transform us as we pray.

The Lord calls us to honor our parents, as it is written Exodus 20:12 Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land which Yahweh your God gives you. When we bring our mother before God daily, we are obeying that command with love and humility, and God honors that obedience by working in us. Prayer keeps our heart tender toward her, helps us to forgive any hurt, and teaches us to see her as God sees her, with compassion and grace, as it is written Ephesians 4:32 And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you.

A hard or distant heart is something only God can truly soften. We cannot soften our own hearts by effort alone, but God promises to do this work in us, as it is written Ezekiel 36:26 I will also give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit within you. I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you a heart of flesh. As you pray daily, you are inviting Him to remove any bitterness, indifference or pain and to replace it with His love. It is also written Philippians 4:6-7 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus. That guarding and softening happens as we consistently bring our requests to Him.

We notice your request did not mention the name of Jesus, and we want to gently share that it is only through Jesus that we have access to God and that our prayers are heard. Jesus said John 14:6 I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. And it is written Acts 4:12 There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved. We encourage you to pray in the name of Jesus Christ, trusting that He died for your sins and rose again, and that through faith in Him you are made right with God. When you pray in His name, God hears you as His child and His Spirit begins that softening work in you.

We pray together with you now. Father in heaven, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ and we lift up this dear one and their mother to You. Thank You for the gift of a mother and for the desire to pray for her daily. We ask You to bless this mother, to keep her, to draw her closer to You, and to supply all her needs. And we ask You to do a deep work in the heart of the one praying, take away any hardness, hurt or coldness and give a new heart of flesh that is tender, compassionate and forgiving. Teach them to love as You love and to honor their mother as Your word commands. Let daily prayer become a joyful communion with You that transforms them more into the likeness of Christ. Guard their heart and thoughts with Your peace. In the name of Jesus we pray, amen.

We encourage you to continue praying every day for your mother, not as a mere duty but as an act of love and trust in God. Bring her needs, her health, her joy and her walk with God before Him, and also ask God to show you how to love her better in action and word. As you remain faithful, you will find God softening your heart, increasing your compassion, and drawing you both closer to Himself.

Thank you for asking this so honestly. Wanting a softer heart toward your mother is itself a tender sign that God is already at work in you.

We have found that praying for someone every day does often soften our hearts, not because the words have some automatic power, but because the practice changes us. When we bring the same person before God day after day, we begin to see them more as He sees them, with compassion rather than only hurt or frustration. It keeps our own heart in conversation with Him, where He can gently shape our attitudes and loosen resentment over time.

If you want to try this, keep it simple and sustainable so you will actually do it. Pick a regular moment, morning or evening, and pray briefly and honestly for your mother, for her needs and well being, and for God to help you love her well. Some people find it helps to name one true thing they are thankful for about her that day, even on hard days. If you do not feel different right away, do not be discouraged. Softening is usually gradual, and God works at His pace as we keep showing up.

Father, in Jesus name we thank You for this desire for a softer heart. Meet our friend each day as they pray for their mother. Pour Your compassion and patience into them, heal any hurt between them, and guide both of them closer to You. Shape their heart day by day according to Your will. Amen.

Your desire to pray daily for your mother is itself a token that God is already at work upon your heart. We do not find prayer in a book or merely in the head, we find it in the heart, as David did when he said your servant has found in his heart to pray this prayer unto you. He looked for it in his heart, and there it was, lying ready, because the Lord had thrown it in at the window.

A prayer that softens the heart must come from a living heart, a believing heart, a serious and humble heart. A proud or self righteous heart will not truly pray, but a heart that has been quickened by grace does pray, and in praying it is further softened. The very act of bringing your mother before the Lord each day keeps your own soul low before Him, reminds you of your need of His compassion, and draws you to the foot of the cross where hearts of stone are made flesh.

Do not think that your prayer must be finely worded to be heard. There is a blessed prayer that comes from faintness itself, when the tongue fails for thirst and the soul can only sigh toward the Father. We say God is a prayer hearing and a prayer answering God, but Scripture says simply, O you that hears prayer. It is enough for Him to hear it. Wherever grace is given, there is always true prayer, even if it is wordless, and He will not let such a soul perish.

There is also in your daily intercession a holy compassion which God loves to see. As a mother feels for her child, so ought we to feel for those near to us who are perishing without Christ, and that compassion, when it drives us to earnest prayer, is a means by which God compassionates both the one prayed for and the one who prays. He pities you as you pity your mother, and He will encourage that tender yearning.

Therefore continue, and continue with importunity. Pray not as a mere form repeated each morning, but as one who agonizes with God, with humble boldness and intensity of desire. Ask that the Lord would give you a soft heart, a heart that mourns sin and trusts only in the great forgiveness that is with Him through the blood of Jesus Christ, for there is forgiveness with God even for great sin, and He has commanded us to pray, forgive us our sins. He would not have put those words in our mouths if there were no pardon to be had.

If you pray thus each day for your mother, expect the Lord to work upon you as well as upon her. He who puts the prayer into your heart will keep it there and make it a channel through which His grace flows to soften, to humble, and to make you more like Christ. Go on in this good way, looking to Jesus alone for salvation, and may the God of peace be with you as you seek Him.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Psalm 37:4: Delight yourself in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.
Matthew 6:33: But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.
