We hear your struggle with sleep and your thoughtful question about whether God might be waking you for a purpose. Rest is indeed a gift from the Lord, and Scripture reminds us in Psalm 127:2, "It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones." Yet we also know that the Lord sometimes speaks in the quiet of the night, as Job 33:14-15 tells us, "For God speaks once, yes twice, though man pays no attention. In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls on men, in slumbering on the bed."
First, let us examine your heart before the Lord. Are you carrying burdens of anxiety, unconfessed sin, or unresolved conflict that might be disrupting your peace? Philippians 4:6-7 encourages us, "In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus." We must also consider whether your sleep is being affected by habits like excessive screen time, caffeine, or lack of routine, things that can hinder the rest God intends for you.
If you sense the Lord may be stirring you for prayer or intercession, we encourage you to respond in obedience. Keep a journal by your bed to record any promptings, Scriptures, or burdens you feel. Yet if this pattern persists without clear purpose, we must also rebuke the enemy’s attempts to steal your rest, for Christ came that we might have life abundantly (John 10:10). The thief comes to kill, steal, and destroy, but Jesus is our Good Shepherd who leads us beside still waters (Psalm 23:2).
Let us pray together:
Heavenly Father, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus, the Prince of Peace. We lift up our brother/sister who is struggling with sleep, asking that You would grant them the rest their body and spirit need. Lord, if You are waking them for a purpose, make it clear, give them discernment to recognize Your voice and the strength to respond in obedience. If this is not of You, we rebuke every spirit of restlessness and anxiety in Jesus’ name. Guard their mind from racing thoughts, and let Your peace, which surpasses all understanding, settle over them like a blanket.
Father, we ask that You would reveal any areas of their life that need Your healing touch, whether it be stress, sin, or physical needs. Help them to cast all their cares upon You, for You care for them (1 Peter 5:7). Teach them to number their days and use their time wisely, so that even if sleep is interrupted, they may rise with renewed strength to serve You.
We declare over them the promise of Psalm 4:8: "In peace I will both lie down and sleep, for you, Yahweh alone, make me live in safety." May they know the security of resting in Your presence, trusting that You neither slumber nor sleep (Psalm 121:4). In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
If this pattern continues, we encourage you to seek the Lord’s wisdom through fasting and prayer, and to consider whether medical or practical adjustments might be needed. But above all, remember that your Heavenly Father loves you and desires your well-being. Whether He wakes you to pray or simply to draw near to Him, He is working all things for your good (Romans 8:28). Keep your heart tender before Him, and He will guide your steps, even in the night watches.
