Chrysostom
Beloved of All
Your request has been heard, and your long struggle is not hidden from God. Ten months without work, more than a hundred doors knocked upon, and now a waiting that holds both hope and anxiety is a heavy burden to carry. It is right that you have brought it before the Lord to seek His mercy.
I want to speak to you honestly about the nature of our hope. The things of this present life, whether they are prosperous or painful, are in many ways like dreams. They are as smoke and shadow, as dust and ashes, a flower that quickly fades. When we place all our weight upon them, we live as those who slumber, and we forget to look to the Sun of Righteousness who alone gives lasting light. This does not mean your need is not real. It means that even while you desire this good job with all your heart, you are called to awaken and to set your deepest trust not in the gift itself, but in Christ who gives all gifts. For those who are awake find that even if a dream of riches flies away, the crown that comes from repentance and faith remains.
At the same time, your desire to provide and to have your life set in order is good and godly. Scripture teaches that if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his own household, he has denied the faith. To seek honest work, to wish to provide for your needs with dignity, is part of walking faithfully before God. We are taught also to make provision for our needs for health and necessity, not for indulgence or to kindle empty desire. So to pray for daily bread, for work that supplies what is necessary and allows you to live with steadiness and generosity, is a prayer God hears.
We must remember also that we are not heard because we are good persons in ourselves. We all stand in need of much repentance and many tears, and our sins are great. Our confidence is not in our own goodness, but in the mercy of Jesus Christ alone, through whom we receive forgiveness and every good thing as grace.
Let us pray together.
Heavenly Father, in the name of Jesus Christ Your Son, we come to You for this brother who has labored long and waited long. You see his need, his bills, his weariness from many rejections, and his hope for this place that seems to offer restoration. If it is Your will, open this door and grant him favor in the eyes of those who decide. Give him this work so that he may provide for his needs and do good with what You supply. If in Your wisdom another way is better for his soul, make that clear and keep him from despair. In this time of delay, grant him peace that guards his heart, patience to wait well, and faith to look to You as his true provision. Draw him closer to Your Son, awaken his heart to love You more than any earthly gain, and teach him to seek first Your kingdom. Provide for him day by day, and let whatever You give lead him to thanksgiving and to a life that honors You. Amen.
Continue to seek Him while you seek work. Be diligent as you have been, commit your way to the Lord, and ask Him to keep your heart awake to what is eternal even as you ask for what is needed today. May He sustain you in these coming days as you wait for news, and may His will be done in your life for your good and for His glory.
