Prayer for selfish and negligant people

Today I feel the need to lift up in prayer: A prayer for those who have lost their way in life through selfishness and neglect. I pray for their sins today oh lord. I pray for you to lead them towards the light amid their dysfunctions and to help them see and learn about the wrongfulness of their prior behaviors. I pray for their sins to no longer hold them down, but instead to teach them and guide them into more Godly and caring behaviors. This I pray in Jesus name. Amen.

We join with you today in lifting up those who have wandered into selfishness and neglect, and we thank you for your compassionate heart that intercedes for them rather than condemning them. It is the heart of God that none should perish but that all should come to repentance, and your prayer reflects His love.

The scriptures warn us that selfishness is not a small flaw but a work of the flesh that leads away from God. Philippians 2:3-4 tells us, Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory, but in lowliness of mind, let each esteem others better than themselves. Each of you not just looking to his own things, but each of you also to the things of others. And James 3:16 reminds us, For where jealousy and selfish ambition are, there is confusion and every evil deed. Neglect of others, especially neglect of our duties to love and serve, is a failure to walk in the love Christ commanded.

Yet we also hold fast to the promise of forgiveness and transformation. When we confess our sins, God is faithful to cleanse us. 1 John 1:9 says, If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. And Proverbs 28:13 assures us, He who conceals his sins does not prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them finds mercy. We do not pray that their sins would simply no longer hold them down, but that they would be brought under the blood of Jesus, repented of, and forsaken, for only then can they truly be free.

We pray together for a new heart and a renewed mind for each one who is trapped in these patterns. Ezekiel 36:26 promises, I will also give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit within you. I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you a heart of flesh. Romans 12:2 calls us, Don't be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what is the good, well-pleasing, and perfect will of God.

So we pray together now. Father, in the name of Jesus we come before Your throne of grace and we lift up every person who has been consumed by selfish and negligent ways. Lord, open their eyes to see the hurt they have caused and the sinfulness of living for self. Bring them to godly sorrow that leads to repentance. Forgive them through the sacrifice of Your Son and cleanse them from all unrighteousness. Remove their heart of stone and give them a heart of flesh that is tender toward You and toward others. Teach them to walk in humility, to esteem others better than themselves, and to bear the fruit of love, kindness, and self-control. Guide them out of darkness and into Your marvelous light, and let their past sins become a testimony of Your mercy and a lesson that leads them into more godly and caring lives. Help those of us who pray for them to continue to love them with patience and to speak truth in love, never enabling sin but always pointing to the cross. We ask all this according to Your perfect will, in the mighty and saving name of Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

Thank you for lifting this up. It is a generous thing to pray for people whose selfishness and neglect may have even hurt you, asking not for judgment but for light and for them to learn a better way.

We were struck by how you put it, that their failures would not just weigh them down but would teach them and guide them into more caring, godly lives. That is the heart of real change. Feeling bad for a moment fades, but when God brings a deeper sorrow and a change of mind, it begins to show in different choices going forward. It is usually a process of honestly facing what was done, bringing it to God, and learning to walk a new direction, and in that process people can be freed from guilt and find the old patterns less appealing.

If these are people you know personally, one steady next step is to keep praying for them by name when you can, asking God for that lasting turn, and continuing to model the care and faithfulness you hope to see in them, with healthy boundaries as needed.

Father, we bring these struggling ones before you. You see where selfishness has taken root and where neglect has caused harm. Bring your light, give them eyes to see, and lead them into repentance that bears fruit in kinder, more responsible lives. Work in their hearts in your mercy and grace. In Jesus' name, Amen.

God, bless me to have an ever growing closer stronger, more intimate relationship with You. Bless me with the love, desire, strength, and the spirit of obedience to always delight myself in You, seek first Your kingdom, Your righteousness, and to always respect and obey You. Bless me to know You, the way You want me to know You. So that I will trust You with my life and anyway that You move in my life. Bless me to trust You with all my heart, lean not to my own understanding, acknowledge You in all my ways, and allow You to direct my footsteps and actions. Bless me with knowledge, wisdom, and understanding in all You have called me to do.

God heal me in every area of my life. Deliver and cleanse me of everything in my life that doesn't honor You. Transform and renew my mind. Bless me with love, power, and a sound mind. Let the mind that is in Christ Jesus be in me. Bless me to have and operate with a God-conscious-solution-focused-heart-mind-spirit-and-attitude. Bless me to have a God Kingdom Culture Mentality. God be with me as a mighty warrior. Let no weapon formed against me prosper. Protect me from all the plans of my enemies and the plans of the enemy of my soul. God, all that I have asked of You, in this prayer, please do the same for the writer of the prayer, all those who love and care about me, and all those I love and care about.
