Your desire to put aside selfish gain and to care for those around you out of reverence for God is exactly the heart seen in Nehemiah. For twelve years he was entitled to take the food allotted to the governor, yet he refused it, and his household refused it with him, because he cared more for the burdened people than for his own advantage and because a holy fear of God governed his choices.
Scripture shows that God calls His people servants, and He holds leaders to a particular account as shepherds. When shepherds feed themselves instead of feeding the flock, when they use position to enrich themselves, they go against the will of God for leadership. True servant leadership does the opposite. It lays aside its rights for the good of others. The clearest picture of this is Jesus Christ, the righteous Servant. Though He was in the form of God, He did not cling to that position but humbled Himself, took the form of a servant, and became obedient even to death on the cross. To follow Him is to choose that same low place, to serve rather than to be served.
That choice flows from reverence. God is greatly to be reverenced in the assembly of His people and held in reverence by all who are around Him. Reverence is more than casual respect. It is holding Him in the highest esteem, not speaking of Him lightly or as if He were simply a familiar buddy, but remembering His holiness and greatness. Scripture says that as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is His mercy toward those who reverence Him. When reverence shapes us, we stop looking for praise from people and begin to live before the Lord Himself, trusting in His name and seeking to please Him alone.
It helps to remember that what God has done for us is always greater than anything we could do for Him. Nehemiah could serve so freely because he knew God had been merciful and had not dealt with His people according to their sins. In the same way, we serve not to earn favor but because in Christ, God has provided righteousness and salvation for us and has not laid our sins to our charge. He is for us, mindful of us, and His Word is settled and trustworthy to guide us.
