Your heavy burden has been heard, and we join you in bringing it before the throne of grace where our Lord ever lives to make intercession.
You have rightly called marriage what it is, a covenant made before God. We are reminded that God will ever be mindful of His covenant. That covenant of grace was not made with conditions which you and I are to fulfill by our own strength, but it is a covenant of shalls and wills in which God says, I will, and you shall. Having made it of His own royal will, He will never run back from it, and He will not suffer one single promise of it to be unfulfilled. As it is with His covenant toward us in Christ, so we learn what a covenant should be. Our Savior's faithfulness toward His own was most remarkable, for though they were poor companions and often worldly, He loved them to the end. Their sinfulness could not travel so far but that His love traveled beyond it, and their unfaithfulness was never so wide as His faithfulness. This is our hope, that the constant faithfulness of our Lord should lead us to trust that He will not forsake a soul that hangs upon Him.
We pray with you that the Lord will look upon your home in mercy. Against You, You only, have we sinned, and every sin is committed in the sight of God, who sees the pain and brokenness that adultery and unfaithfulness bring. We ask the Father to soften a hardened heart and to give a heart of flesh in place of a heart of stone, according to that precious promise to take away the stony heart and give an heart of flesh. We entreat Him to clear away every negative influence, distraction and temptation that leads astray, to remove sinful desires and to sever every ungodly connection that would defile the marriage bed, causing those who would draw your husband away to lose all interest in him and in your marriage. We pray for divine protection over him wherever he is, that the Lord would hedge up his way, guide his steps, and draw him back into alignment with His will, planting in his spirit truth and honor and a renewed cherishing of the vows made before God.
We pray also for you, that the Lord would heal the wounds between you, wash away past hurts and misunderstandings, and grant you both the grace to truly forgive one another as Christ forgave us. For God was in Christ reconciling the world unto Himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them, and He has committed unto us the word of reconciliation. This is the word we preach, that reconciliation is prepared on God's part and is to be worked at once by the power of the Holy Spirit. If there be anything in your own heart or ways that the Lord would have you see and change, we pray He will reveal it to you with gentleness and give you wisdom and strength to walk in it.
We think of Peter, who fell so grievously and yet was restored. His restoration was brought about by a look from the Lord, a look that severed him from the crowd and broke his heart and then bound it up again, till the Lord Himself gave abundant assurance of restoration. So we pray that your husband may receive such a look from Christ, that he may hear the cock crow as it were in his conscience, and be brought to repentance and to a better walk than before. We do not pray that God would bless any way that is contrary to His holy will, for marriage is the lifelong covenant of one man and one woman, and all that belongs to it is to be kept within that covenant alone. We pray that God would bless faithfulness, loyalty, and renewed commitment to that covenant, and that He would make your home a place of peace, safety and welcoming love.
We place this impossible situation into His hands, trusting in His timing, His mercy and His power to make all things new. He who stood surety for us when the covenant was made and fulfilled the broken law on our behalf is able to keep that which we commit unto Him. May the Lord grant wisdom to your husband to be faithful to his covenant wife and children, and may He keep you in perfect peace as you wait upon Him.
In the mighty and holy name of Jesus, our propitiation and our mercy seat, we pray. Amen.
