Silas
Beloved of All
Your honesty about how heavy this feels in the morning and at night is heard, and your faithfulness in reading Scripture and praying daily for your wife and her family is a good and right path to stay on.
The peace you need most is first peace with God, and Scripture teaches that this peace rests not on how well you are performing but on being made right with God through faith in Jesus Christ. Because it is by faith, it does not come and go as you succeed or fail, it remains. That is the foundation for any other peace in your heart and home. When you are reconciled to God through Jesus, the war with God is over and He offers forgiveness and healing, and from that settled peace with Him can come a deeper quiet within, even when the house is not quiet.
God desires peace for you and has made a way of peace through Jesus, who is our peace. The wisdom that comes from above is peaceable and gentle, and it sows in peace so that it may reap a harvest of righteousness. The wisdom of this world, by contrast, leads to strife and wars, even inside a home. You are seeing that proverb come true that a dry morsel with quietness is better than a house full of plenty with strife. Constant bickering wears down the soul, and once strife is released it is like water breaking through a dam, very hard to stop. That is why Scripture urges us to leave off contention before it grows and to be counted wise by holding our peace at times, not out of weakness but out of the gentleness that is fruit of the Spirit.
In marriage God has given a simple pattern that brings peace when it is followed and brings compounding trouble when it is broken. Husbands are called to love their wives sacrificially as Christ loves, and wives are called to submit to their husbands as unto the Lord. This does not mean a husband lords over his wife, for he himself is to be under Christ, and it does not mean love is earned. When a husband loves his wife he is also caring for himself, for the two are one flesh. Much strife can be avoided when each yields in love rather than insisting on winning the point. You cannot make your wife obey that calling, and trying to force it by pushing or arguing often pushes a resistant heart further away.
You are right to grieve that she sees the problem yet will not seek help and will not turn to the Lord. Scripture is plain that God says peace, peace to those far off and to those near, and He will heal those who come to Him, but there is no peace for those who remain in rebellion against Him, they remain like a troubled sea. Only Jesus can give the inner rest that people often look for in other places and never find. Continue to pray that God will bring true conviction, not merely awareness of a problem but a turning to Jesus for forgiveness and new life.
God has called us to peace, not to warfare in marriage. As much as it lies within you, pursue peace and live peaceably. That means keeping your own walk close to Jesus, yielded to the Spirit so your body and words become instruments of His love and peace, and being shod with the gospel of peace in how you speak and respond at home. A quiet, consistent life in Christ often speaks louder than many words, and Scripture holds out hope that an unbelieving spouse may be won without a word by observing the faithful life of the other.
We are praying with you that God will guard your heart with the peace that comes from being justified by faith, that He will lift the heaviness you feel when you wake and when you lie down, that He will give you wisdom to know when to speak and when to hold your peace, to answer with gentleness and to leave off strife early, and that He will work in your wife to bring conviction and draw her to Jesus for healing and salvation. May He make your home a place of quietness and grant you both the grace to walk after the Spirit together.
Father, we ask You to establish this brother in the peace he has with You through Jesus, to fill him with Your Spirit so that peace and contentment mark his heart, and to extend Your mercy to his wife, opening her eyes to her need and drawing her to turn to Jesus and find forgiveness and rest. Bring Your healing to this marriage and let righteousness be sown in peace. In Jesus name, Amen.
