Your prayer comes from a heart that feels the weight of silence and distance, and it is good that you have brought it to the Lord, for He waits to be gracious. The Scripture says, the Lord waiteth that He may be gracious unto you, and blessed are all they that wait for Him. Think of this first, that God Himself is a waiting God, long forbearing and patient toward us, not willing that we should perish but that we should be reconciled unto Himself.
And this must be our first concern. Before we ask the Lord to reconcile us to one another, we must see that we are reconciled to Him. He is the God of peace and He has prepared everything necessary for a perfect reconciliation, not by our tears or our pleadings, but by Jesus Christ. God was in Christ reconciling the world unto Himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them. All things are of God who hath reconciled us to Himself by Jesus Christ. There is no true peace between man and man until there is peace between man and God, and that peace is only through faith in His Son. So I would ask you, while you wait, whether your hope is built upon Christ alone for salvation, for there is no other name under heaven whereby we must be saved.
You speak of waiting, and of longing that he should reach out soon, and of desiring a softened heart and right words. Waiting is a holy exercise. The believer waits upon God as a servant waits upon his lord, anxious to know what his master wishes him to do, and as a traveler waits upon his guide. Waiting upon God is the way to renew our strength, until we mount up with wings as eagles. It breeds peace within the soul, and when a man is at rest within, he cares little for trials or foes. It exercises patience, and patience is a choice gift of God. You have heard of the patience of Job, who was tried and afflicted, and his patience was not the patience of a brute that cannot complain, nor of a stoic who refuses to feel, but the patience of a child who believes in his father's love. The Lord tried him, and through waiting his faith was proved and his God was glorified.
Therefore I would exhort you not to chase, but to wait. Faith knocks at mercy's door and then waits for a reply. Merely to knock without waiting is like the runaway knock of idle boys in the street. Faith waits and watches, and patience stands by her side, knowing that the windows of heaven, though they seem fast closed, will open soon to waiting souls. Do not let your heart be driven by assumptions or by outside opinions, but bring your heart and his heart under the searching light of the Word of God.
And concerning that Word, I must speak plainly and tenderly. The relationship of marriage is not lightly to be taken up or put aside. It is a covenant before God, ordained for one man and one woman for life, and the Lord who says, Thy Maker is thine husband, takes upon Himself all the responsibilities of that covenant, and calls those who enter it to reverence and faithfulness. If you love this man, then love must seek holiness. Sex and living together belong only within that covenant, and any path that leads otherwise, however strong the affection, is not a path the Lord will bless. Do not ask God to bless what His Word does not sanction, but ask Him to make your path and his path conformable to His holy will. If you are not bound in that covenant, then seek first purity, honesty, and a clear conscience before God, and let every conversation and every step look toward that which is honourable and lasting in the sight of the Lord.
So let us pray not merely for a speedy message or for the return of warm feelings, though God knows your longing, but for that which is better.
O Lord, Thou waitest to be gracious, have mercy upon this soul who waits before Thee. Forgive sin through the blood of Christ and reconcile this heart fully unto Thyself. Soften what is hard, humble what is proud, and take away anger and misunderstanding, not only between these two, but between each heart and Thee. Grant patience that endures trial, the patience of a child trusting a Father's love. Teach both to wait upon Thee as servants upon their Lord, to hear Thy voice in Thy Word and to do Thy will. If it be Thy will and according to Thy holy ordinance, guide them toward that which is pure and covenantal and true, and give them right words seasoned with grace. If it be not Thy will that they walk together, give grace to accept Thy wisdom and to find contentment in Thy love alone. In either way, let Christ be exalted and let peace that passeth understanding guard the heart. Keep this waiting one from restless chasing, and let hope be the strength of waiting, until Thou shalt show in Thine own time what is good. Amen.
