We have heard your request and we join you in prayer for your husband in this very difficult trial. To see one you love unable to stand and facing such serious blockage is a heavy burden, and to carry a habit of fifty years is also a heavy chain. God sees both the suffering of the body and the struggle of the will, and He hears your cry for help.
The counsel of the physician is wise and should be heeded, for the body is given by God and we are called to care for it. Smoking for so long has a strong hold, and strength to turn from it will not come from resolve alone. Scripture reminds us that we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us, and that even when we are weak He is strong. As we have taught, we must not despair and cease the healing treatment while there is still time, but persist in prayer and in the means God provides. Just as a tree may stand after many blows and fall at last by one more, so many prayers and many efforts that seem without fruit are still working, softening the heart and preparing the way for deliverance. Christ does not break the bruised reed nor quench the smoking flax, but deals gently with those who are weak and draws them toward victory.
Let us pray together:
Heavenly Father, in the name of Jesus Christ we lift up this husband to You. You know the blockage in his legs and the pain and weakness he endures. We ask for Your mercy and healing hand upon his body, for wisdom for his doctors, and for a way toward restoration according to Your will. Lord, we ask especially for strength for him to turn from smoking. After more than fifty years this habit is deeply rooted, but nothing is too hard for You. Grant him a new desire for health and life, take away the craving, give him endurance in the hard days of withdrawal, and surround him with support and encouragement. Help his wife to have peace and steadfast hope as she stands beside him. Let this trial draw them both closer to You and to trust more deeply in Your grace. Amen.
Continue to bring him before the Lord each day and do not grow weary in praying. Encourage him with love and patience, and help him to use every practical help that is available to quit, trusting that God will supply the strength for each step. We will keep praying with you for his freedom from this bondage and for healing.
