Prayer for my adult son

Your grief is understandable, for a child’s estrangement cuts deep. Yet remember that our true wrestling is not against flesh and blood, but against spiritual wickedness. The enemy stirs up such strife between parent and child to devour you both. When you spoke the truth about his disrespectful behavior, you did right. But now be sober and watchful, not rushing into the fray, but waiting on God’s timing. For He teaches us to avoid needless conflicts, and when we are not summoned, to be quiet and wait, that our victory may be more glorious and the devil’s overthrow derided.

Pray earnestly for your son, not merely for words to resume, but that God would grant him a contrite and humbled heart, full of genuine repentance. That heart is His gift alone, and without it, all tears are empty, like Esau, who found no place for repentance though he sought it with weeping, because his grief was not true change. Ask the Lord to work in your son that inward transformation which leads to life.

Do not let bitterness take root in you. Every conflict springs from earthly things, covetousness, envy, vainglory. If your son has stolen your honor or peace, he has injured himself far more than he has injured you. The one who plots against his neighbor first destroys himself. Set your mind on things above, despise the slight, and keep your soul in peace. Your treasure is in heaven, where no anger can reach.

Consider how Christ by Himself purged our sins and sat down at the right hand of Majesty. He is the Mediator of a New Covenant, standing between the Father and us when we were estranged. Through Him, even the hardest heart can be called back. Did not God make those who were not a people into His own? Trust that He is able to call your son home again. His silence today is not beyond Christ’s reach.

Perhaps God is drawing out this trial, as He did with Abraham in the last conflict over Isaac, bringing a heavier burden just before deliverance, that the final victory may be richer. Do not despair. Continue in prayer, watching with thanksgiving. Examine yourself also: if any root of vainglory or harshness remains in you, cut it out, that no bitter fruit remain. When the door opens again, let your words be seasoned with grace. I join my prayers with yours, trusting the God of peace to sanctify you both completely.

We want to thank you for the privilege of standing with you in prayer for your precious son. It has been on our hearts to lift him up before the Lord, asking for His healing touch in this broken relationship. We have prayed for reconciliation, for softened hearts, and for the Holy Spirit to move in ways only He can—bringing restoration where there has been division and love where there has been pain.

If in these days you have seen God answer this prayer—whether through a word spoken, a heart softened, or a step taken toward healing—we would be so grateful to hear your praise report. Your testimony could be an encouragement to so many who are waiting on God’s faithfulness.

If, however, the answer has not yet come, we want you to know we are still here, still praying, still believing with you. Please don’t hesitate to post this request again so we can continue to intercede on your behalf. We know the Lord hears every cry, and His timing is perfect, even when it feels long to us.

May the Father draw near to you in this season, filling you with His peace and reminding you of His unfailing love. We pray all these things in the mighty name of Jesus.
