Prayer for my adult son

Ethaelnorance

Disciple of Prayer
My adult son has not spoken to me in 2 years and 2 months because he didn’t want to hear the truth from me about his disrespectful behavior towards me, his wife, his kids and his youngest brother.

We come before the Lord with heavy hearts, lifting up your son and the broken relationship between you. Father God, we know that Your Word tells us in Ephesians 4:29, "Let no corrupt speech proceed out of your mouth, but such as is good for building up as the need may be, that it may give grace to those who hear." We pray that You would soften your son’s heart to receive the truth in love, not as condemnation, but as an opportunity for growth and restoration.

Lord, we also ask that You convict him of any unrepentant sin in his life, particularly the disrespect he has shown toward his family. Your Word is clear in Exodus 20:12, "Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land which Yahweh your God gives you." Disrespect toward parents is not just a relational issue, it is a matter of obedience to You. We pray that he would humble himself before You and seek reconciliation, not just with you, but with his wife, children, and brother as well.

We rebuke the spirit of pride and rebellion that has taken root in his heart. Proverbs 16:18 warns, "Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall." Father, break down the walls of stubbornness and open his ears to hear Your voice. We declare that no weapon formed against this family will prosper (Isaiah 54:17) and that You will bring healing where there has been division.

We also lift up his marriage, Lord. If there has been any ungodly behavior, whether in speech, action, or neglect, we ask that You bring conviction and repentance. Marriage is a sacred covenant before You (Matthew 19:6), and we pray that he would cherish and honor his wife as Christ loves the church (Ephesians 5:25). If there has been any sin, whether anger, bitterness, or even adultery, we ask that You expose it and lead him to true repentance.

Father, we pray for your protection over his children. May they not grow up with the wounds of a father’s disrespect or anger, but may they see the love of Christ through him. We ask that You would restore what has been broken and bring unity to this family.

We encourage you, dear parent, to continue praying without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:17) and to trust in God’s timing. Proverbs 22:6 says, "Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it." Even when it seems like he has strayed, God is still at work. We also urge you to examine your own heart, have you spoken the truth in love (Ephesians 4:15), or has there been any bitterness or unforgiveness on your part? If so, we pray that You would help you release it to the Lord.

Finally, we pray that your son would come to know Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior if he does not already. There is no true restoration outside of Christ, for "there is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved" (Acts 4:12). We ask that You draw him to Yourself and that he would surrender his life fully to You.

Heavenly Father, we ask all these things in the mighty name of Jesus, our Redeemer and Restorer. May Your will be done in this family, and may Your name be glorified through their healing. Amen.

We've been holding this with you in prayer, and we're so sorry that the silence has stretched on this long. The ache of missing your son and the tension between wanting him to know you love him while you also spoke what needed to be said, that is a heavy place to sit. Please know you're not alone in it.

Sometimes when an adult child pulls away, it isn't really about rejecting you. It can be a sign that the truth you spoke hit something tender, something he isn't yet ready to face. That doesn't make the waiting any easier, but it can help you separate his reaction from your own worth or the love you've always carried.

In this season of waiting, one gentle next step might be to write a short, simple note, not to revisit the conflict, just a few lines saying you love him, you're here, and you hope to reconnect whenever he's ready. No pressure, just a door left open. And because this kind of grief is too much to carry alone, we'd encourage you to lean on a trusted friend or pastor who will grieve with you and keep praying beside you.

Jesus, you know what it is to love someone who turns away. Draw near to this mother in her sadness. Quiet her heart with your presence, and work in her son in ways only you can. In your perfect timing, soften his heart and make a path toward healing. Until then, hold her steady and fill the ache with your peace. Amen.

The trial you describe is indeed a bitter one, and many a parent’s heart has been rent by the silence of a beloved child. Yet remember, the Lord Himself knows what it is to be estranged from His sons and daughters, and He has committed unto us the word of reconciliation, not that we might reconcile Him to us, but that by our patient love we might be instruments to woo the wandering back. Though your son has stopped his ears, the Lord can speak in a way that no man can resist. Pray, therefore, with David’s boldness: “Deliver me, O Lord, from the evil man: preserve me from the violent man.” Not that your son is your enemy, but the spirit that holds him captive is violent indeed, compassing him about like bees, stinging him with pride and self-deceit.

Strange things we have seen in the days of the Son of Man, and stranger still are the ways of His grace. When the Lord means to save, He finds a reason for mercy where human reason finds none. Was not this the case with the prodigal? The father saw him a great way off, saw the rags, the filth, the shame, and ran. Swift are the feet of forgiveness, swifter than the slow steps of repentance. Do not despair that your son’s heart seems hard. The Lord who breaks the cedar of Lebanon can shatter the pride of a man with a whisper. And remember, those locust-eaten years of silence shall be restored. “I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten,” saith the Lord. The time that seems wasted, the affection that appears buried, can be raised to life again.

Continue in prayer; bathe your wounds at the throne of grace, for that is the bath which takes the venom out of every sting. And when you pray, mingle great faith with your petitions. Say with the psalmist, “I know that the Lord will maintain the cause of the afflicted.” He is the God that justifieth the ungodly, and His strange choice ever falls upon the humble and contrite. You have spoken truth to your son in love; now leave the issue with Him who can make the valley of Achor a door of hope. The lips that confess sin, the Lord is swift to kiss; and if your son will but own his fault, there will be a welcome such as heaven alone can give. Till then, wait upon the Lord, and let your silent, steadfast love be a living sermon, trusting that He who turned the heart of Saul to David shall yet turn your son’s heart back again.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Psalm 37:4: Delight yourself in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.
Matthew 6:33: But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.
